DSR6000 Backup/Restore/Unrestore

I have a DSR 6000 that was upgraded by adding an 80 GB Maxtor drive over a year ago. The unit has now started rebooting itself every day or so and once had a GSOD which it recovered from (but still reboots spontaneously). After reading through the forums, I suspect that this may be due to one or more of the drives failing. What I would like to do is to put the current two drive system onto one or two other drives I have here, but I have a few questions regarding the upgrade instructions.
I have available the original 40GB drive from my HDVR2 and a Maxtor 120 GB drive. In all cases I want to preserve all the recordings in the process of doing this. The 120GB drive I want to use temporarily while I test the drives and/or wait for warranty replacement.
1. Is there any way to put the contents of both drives onto the 120GB drive and then later putting that back onto two drives?
2. I believe what I want to do is covered in upgrade configuration #6 in Hinsdale's how-to, but what exactly are the restrictions as far as the note in the second paragraph?
quote:
Those with dual drive DirecTiVos, dual drive Series 2 units (with user added B drive), the rare factory combined dual drive standalones (see Step 7 Option #2 for description), or dual drive UK Thompson TiVo will not have enough available partitions remaining in order to combine their existing drives onto a single larger A drive and expand to use any remaining space while still preserving their recordings. For further upgrade possibilities of these units see Upgrade Configuration #2 (will not preserve recordings) or Upgrade Configuration #4 or #5 (preserves recordings)
3. Would my best bet be to buy another 80 GB drive and use configuraion #5?
Thanks,
Tom

You may not have enough spare partitions on the A drive to move the B drive partitions on to it and expand, but then, you don't need to. If there's enough room for the data on the 120 then it should work.
You should be able to add a B drive or copy the data back on to two drives if you want to expand again.

I'm currently using mfsbackup & restore to put it on the 120GB. If I want to later put it back onto two drives, does just the total capacity of the two drives combined need to be large enough to expand?

MFS Tools will distribute the partitions across the two drives, but obviously there will be one 80Gb partition and either 1 40 or 2 20's from the A drive, so as long as the new drives are large enough to hold them, you should be OK.
Don't use the x on restore if the drives are the same size as the originals.

If you add a B drive later, any capacity will work, just as long as you have enough free partitions left from previous upgrades. If you can part with your exisiting recordings, you'll be resetting the partition table and you'll be able to add a new B drive easily down the road.
