Upgrade with Seagate 120 GB

I have a new DSR7000 (2 weeks old) that I decided to replace the Maxtor 40GB (Fireball 3) with a Seagate 120GB Barracuda (ST3120026A).

I followed the Hinsdale instructions, the backup and restore worked with no errors reported. But when I tested out my restored image in the DSR7000, I get a mechanical clicking sound for 45-60 seconds then it never leaves the gray "Powering Up" screen.

The first time I tried the Seagate in the TiVo I left it strapped as cable select, because the Maxtor was setup that way. I retried the Seagate strapped as master, but no difference. Just for a sanity check I reinstalled the Maxtor and it successfully booted and I could could watch some DirecTv.

One worry I had before buying the drive was that it is ATA/100 while the Maxtor is ATA/133. I searched the board and saw others using Seagate 120GBs, so I assumed it was ok. Is this a bad assumption?

Well, I decided to retry the backup and restore. When I installed the Seagate in my PC I get the same clicking and it won't boot.

The drive definitely went bad, but how? I didn't drop it, I doubt there was any static, it's very humid here in Dallas now. I didn't run the unlock utility at all.

Should I try another Seagate or just get a refund?

We refer to these as 'dead on arrival'. Just return it for a replacement.
