Quieting a Direct Tivo

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My Direct Tivo is really loud. I need to turn it off at night so I can sleep.

I am planning on upgrading the harddrives but, I am not sure that will be quiet enough.

Any ideas on making it quiet.? To bad we cant use laptop drives I think they are quieter.

Thanks for your help.

Probably the best thing to do is relocate it in another room. :)

If the drive you hear is a loud whining sound (vs the clickety-clack of head movement) that it is likely that a drive replacement will make a big enough difference for you to consider not turning the unit off... if its the head noises (aka 'signature') then you might notice a difference with drives such as the Samsung or some Seagate drives, but it will probably not be as noticable as in the former case.

This could also be the fan. Have you cleaned or replaced it recently? They get louder as they get older.

Great ideas.

I am going to replace the drives and probably the fan now that you mention it.

If I relocate it in the closet who makes an inexpensive IR extender.?

I agree.

Additionally, an unusual suggestion if all else fails:

Among my many Tivo's is a special situation machine with a loud drive I can't replace (long irrelevant story). I fashioned a reasonably attractive shallow cardboard box [box top actually] with dense foam inside the top and all sides (except for the back which has been cut off). It sits right on top of the Tivo and makes a huge difference in sound. Temperature impact is modest to moderate (previously I had added a strip of foam down the center underneath the Tivo which had knocked it down a few degrees). I had expected unacceptable temperature results from this experiment and was suprised. Remote control works fine through the box and padding.
