weaknees upgrade - now big problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I performed a weaknees upgrade to add a 2nd 120gb drive to my hdvr2 unit. The install went flawlessly until I powered on the unit. I get the message "welcome. powering up...' and thats where it stays.

I checked all the troubleshooting and did the following:
1) removed all new components, went back to stock config - same problem
2) performed check on original Maxstor 40gb drive - passed all tests
3) doublechecked I did not touch the front panel ribbon cable - it looks solid.

So - according to weaknees website it is either a hard drive or power problem. I think I ruled out hard drive, but how can I doublecheck the power supply? The fans are fine and I 'hear' the hard drive clicking upon first powering up the unit..

Also - Can I take the new 120gb unit and make it master, then plug it in as the only drive in the system? If it works will I just have lost my saved settings?

please help!

Did you move any jumpers?

Posted by: jmiani

Nope - did not change any jumpers/setttings, etc. thx!

Hmmm, in that case it's not obvious what's wrong. I don't understand why the original drive wouldn't at least get to 'almost there'.

Anyway, weaknees have a rescue program for cases like this, so if you call them they'll help you out.

Sometimes people are able to install the IDE cable upside-down. It has "keys" on it that should make it fit only one way, but with a little force, you can insert it either way. Same is true, to some extent, with the power cables.

Have you re-checked the IDE cables? Look for the "key" or groove on each connector and look for the slot on the receiving connector and make sure they match up, and also that there are no bent pins.

Also, you said you didn't move any jumpers, but you DO need to move a jumper on the existing Maxtor drive, as specified in the instructions. Did you do this?

Feel free to reply back here, email us at tivo@weaknees.com or to call us at 888-WEAKNEES.

Hi Michael - I have doublechecked the IDE cables, and have also gone back to the single Maxtor drive with original cable. I am aware of the notch and have inserted it properly each time.. I also checked to make sure each of the pins of the connector on the motherboard were straight.

I did not change any jumper on the maxtor because I have the 2 jumper version.. they are in the 'L' shape as referenced in the inst:

<------------ clip ------------------------>
In a two-jumper Maxtor hard drive,
the jumper should be set properly, and should be in the shape of an "L" turned 45 degrees clockwise.
<------------ end ------------------------>

Any other ideas? I'm up to try anything as the new fall season kicks off tonight and I want to record EVERYTHING!!!

thx!!
