Show Recording Question

Here is the deal.. Can someone give me a fast answer:

2 Shows.. both with season passes..

Now in new seasons so all first run.

They air the SAME TIME.. and ONE repeats at another time later in the week.

If I put them both in a season pass, and put the one that DOESNT repeat first, it seems to work fine.. it gets the seond one on the next night it airs.

HOWEVER... if I set the repeating show's pass to FIRST RUN ONLY, WILL IT still record the episode later in the week... or think it is a rerun and ignore it, since it is not really 1st run anymore (the original air date shows the 1st showing of the week).

Thanks for the help.

Mike

Yes. Tivo considers shows whose original air dates are within the last two weeks to be first-run.

I am not sure if I understand what ZikZak said but here is what happens for me. I have SPs for Carnivale and for K Street (though I think I will get rid of K Street). They record on Sunday night. I also have SPs for Alias and The Practice. Both The Practice and Alias are HIGHER on my SP list than Carnivale and K Street. In addition, all four SPs are set to only tape first run shows. Since the new seasons of Alias and The Practice will begin this Sunday they will bump both Carnivale and K Street. BUT since K Street and Carnivale re-air on Monday they are both set to record on Monday.

You can check this out yourself by doing all of the changes and then looking at your "TO DO" list.

I hope this answerers your question!

What ZikZak said is right; TiVo will consider the second airing a first-run episode, and will not think the second airing is a rerun.

However, depending on the show or channel, TiVo still may or may not record the second airing. Here's why: If the show has enough of a description that TiVo can determine it's a rebroadcast of a previous episode, then it will not record the second airing (assuming it successfully recorded the first airing). If you look in the Recording History, it will say something like "did not record because the same episode appears in Now Playing or To Do within 28 days of this episode".

If the show does not have enough of a description for TiVo to identify it as the same episode that it already recorded, then it will record the second airing as well.

Examples: Enterprise and Smallville both have their first airing during the week and then repeat the same episode on the weekend. Because both of those have good program descriptions, if TiVo records the first airing during the week, it will not record the second airing on the weekend. However, if TiVo misses the first airing (because of a conflict or some other reason), then it will record the second airing.

But for shows like The Real World, which airs 5 times a day and often has poor program descriptions, TiVo will not be able to identify which episode it is, and therefore will record every dang one of them.

Hope this makes it clear.

Funny, my TiVo records exactly one Real World a week...

MikeRadio:

The only thing I'll add to the advice you've already received is that you need to be sure the repeated first-run episodes are either on the same HBO (or whatever) channel as your SP is set for -- or you need to use a Wishlist instead, since WLs aren't channel-specific.

In other words, if Carnivale runs on Sundays on HBO, but on Mondays on HBO2, then a SP for the Sunday-night airing would *not* record the one on Monday night. A Carnivale Wishlist would.
