What is your favorite local restaurant?

Where is your favorite local (non-chain) restaurant. What do you go to have a good meal with friends?
In Baltimore it’s this great Italian place called Amiccis in Little Italy. The food is always amazing (including my favorite the House Gnocchi), the wait staff always has a good sense of humor and I’ve never had a bad time when I went there. Of course dinner is not complete without desert from Vaccaro's across the street.

In Fort Worth, we go to Los Vaqueros. Great mexican food - and the staff know us and give us great service.

There's a fish place that's got great fish, considering where we are.
That said, I've got a few watering holes I frequent.

Go there and get the BBQ shrimp appetizer. You'll think you should get a small, but don't. Do yourself a favor and go for the large!

My favorite local restaurant isn't local to me (anymore...I moved). But it is called Las Fajitas. Yes, the name is corny, but it is owned by a couple from Argentina (IIRC) and they make wonderful mexican food.
In the town I live in.....sadly, I don't have a favorite as they all pretty much are mediocre. I had a favorite, but the guy had a Subway store and a restaurant as well as a catering business. The catering business was going like gangbusters and he just didn't have the time to keep the restaurant open. He does dinners on Thursday nights, though, so if we want to eat what he is cooking that night, we can.

yum! And very friendly waitstaff. :D

Maggie's Kitchen (click on link in the middle of the table for picture and menu) -- authentic fresh Mexican (actually Michocan) food. Fantastic.

How about chains that aren't local? I love Bob Evans, a chain, but there are none in Colorado that I know of. And not to hijack the thread, but what's so bad about chain restaurants? I can think of lots of local places where, depending upon what day you happen to eat there, they have absolutely terrible food. There's a place here that specializes in Irish food and claims to have the best corn beef in the world. I ate there years ago and thought it was very good, then went there the other night and had the worst corn beef I've ever had anywhere. But every time I go to Jason's Deli (a chain) I know if I order corn beef it's going to be very good and it's going to be the same with each and every visit. Not that all chains are good. Take Chilies and the Olive Garden--both serve up crap consistently, in my opinion.

Our current favorite is Ted's Cafe Escondido. They just opened a second location within 5 minutes of us. My favorite dish is their mexican cremed corn, and their fajita's are incredible.

Taqueria Del Sol and Sundown Cafe are both good cheap southwestern food. And walking distance from mi casa.

Bella Roma, a local Italian restaurant.
It's decorated in a cheesy 50's style (the only thing missing is the plastic covering on the seats), but the food is good stuff...

As andrew would know if he would just join me there for lunch some day!
Going there for dinner tonight! Yumm. Besides, the menu is a hoot to read! You can read the numbered choices on the menu page of the web site. Not only amusing, but tasty!

In Arlington, Buck 'n Loons for some interesting burgers and CFS.
In southwest Dallas, Chan Thai.

When I was living in Baltimore, I *LOVED* Amiccis.
My favorite restaurant is in the North End of Boston and is called Dom's. It's not where I frequent most, because it's not cheap. The place I go most often with friends is La Caretta in Nashua, NH. I'm there just about every week to meet with some former co-workers/friends.

Fiesta Mexicanna... Great authentic mexican food... the waitstaff is severely understaffed (as I think they only hire Mexicans, which I'm sure the INS would have a lovely time with) and the margaritta's aren't the greatest (I get better Margaritta's from Red Lobster) but the food is to die for...

Il Forno is a great Italian/Mediteranian place. Probably the best I've eaten in Massachusetts.
Posted by: jwjody
I live in a not too big town so there's a lot of local places to go to.
Jerry's Drive In (the greasiest and best double cheeseburger you'll ever have)
New Yorker Deli
Georgio's
Fish House
Halls
Joe Patti's
Madisons
Ozone's
Many many more...

At the top of our hit parade...
Local to us:
Taco Mesa (small family-owned chain)
Spaghetti Bender
Side Street Cafe
...others we make a point of visiting when in the area...
Chef Rick's Ultimately Fine (Orca, CA)
Hitching Post II (Burellton, CA)
Chritine's (Uma, AZ)
Extraordinary Desserts (San Diego, CA)
McConnell's Ice Cream (Santa Barbara, CA)
McSorley's Tavern (New York, NY)

Favorite local restaurant: Mie Thai, Woodbridge, NJ. (http://www.miethai.com). Their menu is huge, and everything we have tried so far is great. Sometimes, when it is busy, the wait staff can be a bit slow, but that is probably because they are systematically understaffed.
2nd on the list: Amravathi in Matawan, NJ. Indian restaurant where the waiter knows what we want: Chicken Pakoras, Chicken Tikka Masala with Rice and Naan!!
Man, this thread is making me hungry!

When I'm home, it's Shubox Cafe in Cedar Grove, N.J.
If I want to impress people, I take them to either The Manor or Highlawn Pavilion, both in West Orange, N.J. and owned by the same family. Equally impressive (and expensive) is Il Tulipano in Cedar Grove, which is one of New Jersey's finest Italian restaurants.
If I just want some thin-crust pizza, my new favorite place is Lombardi's in Cedar Grove. And if I want steak, I go to Pals Cabin in West Orange. (The Manor, Highlawn, and Pals are all within a mile of each other.)
When I visit my sister in Kansas, it's either McCorrmick & Schmick's in the Plaza in Kansas City, Mo., or Nick & Jake's.

They had a nice buffalo stew type thing the last time I was there. But I go mostly for the drinks and atmosphere. :) It's still technically kind of a "restaurant".

Malaga, in Hamilton/Trenton. It's actually across the street from Trenton (Lalor Street being the border between Trenton and Hamilton).
It's a Portugese restaurant that is absolutely incredible! They have paella for two (huge mound of saffron rice filled with shellfish, sausage, chicke, and topped with a baby lobster tail). They have the absolute best garlic pork chops and chicken. You get this platter with three HUGE pork chops smothered in a wonderful garlic sauce, saffron rice, steamed vegetables, and (this is great!) homemade potato chips. The potato chips circle the platter. Great big thick slices of crispy fried potatoes. They have garlic shrimp as an appetizer, and it's a nice platter of small shrimp in a wonderful garlic sauce.
I know I specified a lot of garlic dishes, but it's so good! They have other Portugese dishes, but we always wind up ordering one of those. On a slower evening, one of the waiters will pull out his guitar and stroll around serenading everyone. He'll even take requests. I was stunned and thought it was a mean joke when the woman at our table requested "Satisfaction" from the Rolling Stones, but damn! He started playing a really good rendition of it! (She had heard him do it before, so she wasn't joking).
Great place. It's owned by the same family that owns "Spain" in Newark, but I think it's better than that one. It's definitely a restaurant worth driving a distance to.

For me, Aoki in Exton, PA is my favorite. It's a little Japanese place with terrific sushi.
If someone else is buying, Gilmore's or The Dilworthtown Inn, both near West Chester, PA are my choices. Terrific continental-type cuisine in spectacular settings.

Juanitos II in Howell, NJ. It's a second restaurant to the one reviewed here . Great food, a bit on the expensive side, though.

It's local only in that it's in the same state as I reside. It's Jaeger's Seafood and Beer Garden in New Orleans. We ate there a few months ago while we were vacationing and I loved it! So much so that everytime the weekend comes around, I think about making the three hour trip and spending a night just to go eat at Jaeger's again. I loved it!
Oh yeah, it's seafood.

In Austin: Mother's (vegetarian), Veggie Heaven (vegetarian Chinese) or Hut's Hamburgers.
In Dallas: Veggie Garden or Veggie Suma (vegetarian Chinese food)
In Arlington: Star India (Indian..obviously)
In Fort Worth: Spiral Diner (vegetarian cafe)
In Denton: Mr. Chopsticks (Asian cooking), Mi Casita (Mexican) or Tara Pherma (vegetarian).
As vegetarians, we try to patronize the vegetarian restaurants to keep them open. Vegetarian restaurants in Denton usually last about a year or two. Hopefully Tara Pherma will last longer.

Sorry, but McCorrmick & Schmick's is a chain. A good chain (I've been to locations in Philly and D.C), but a chain nonetheless.
I vote for Raimo's Pizza in Hicksville, Long Island, NY. The decor is pure pizzaria and the pizza is great (thin crust, thick cheese), but the Eggplant Parm and Baked Ziti are to die for. When I go home to visit my family, I eat at Raimo's almost every night I'm there. However, the owner, or his family, own two other restaurants (on on Long Island and one in Manhattan). Does that count as a chain?
This isn't exactly a restaurant, but it is a hangout and the food is fantastic. Bagel Boss, across the street from Raimo's, has the best bagels in the world. They also have a number of locations, but I think local chains should count as local restaurants.
As far as here in D.C., Luigi's is good for Italian, and Tuto Bene has good Italian food in Arlington, but I haven't had anything knock my socks off. A lot of the dining in D.C. is chains (more upscale chains like Prime Rib, Legal Sea Foods, Morton's, Ruth's Chris, The Palm, and the aforementioned McCorrmick & Schmick's).

For right now, I think I will have to go with Primo's on McKinney. So far the best Mexican (not texmex) I have had in Dallas. But this could change considering how many awesome restaurants are in Dallas. (Near the top are Mi Cocina and Fogo De Chau, but they have been mentioned).
Since I was in Boston not too long ago, I would say Trattoria Il Panino and Atlantic Fish Company.

Il Tulipano is one of my insureds. Good food.
But beaten by Pacific Grille, in Mt Laurel NJ. :)
You can't give a name to their cuisine, too many influences. But the fish dishes are melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
Lots of represenation in NJ, here! :)

For steamed crabs in Baltimore:
Obrycki's in Fells Point (Inside seating)
Bo Brooks in Canton (sit outside on the decks if you can)
Captain James in Canton (only if you can sit outside on the docks)
Three of the best crab joints in Baltimore.

Jack's Stack (the original one, in Martin City) for Barbeque
Medina's (a hole in the wall dive) for Mexican food
Genghis Khan for Mongolian Barbeque
Jun's for Sushi
Cafe Allegro was my overall favorite, but it's sadly now closed.
In Cincinnati:
The Palace - absolutely wonderful steaks and amazing deserts (try the Chocolate Tower)

There's a place up in Plano that we go to for Greek Food. For the life of me, I can't remember the name. We call it Gus's, after the owner. We're sort of regulars there. :)
It's fantastic Greek food. They have some exquisite food. If you ever had to have a final meal, their Crab Claws are the way to go. They make a fabulous lamb, and I HATE lamb, but I'd eat it there. They also have a delectable Baklava Ice Cream that should be a felony, it's so good.
Now I need to go find out what the actual name is....

I'm pretty sure that the Bagel Boss in Hicksville is the original, but I'm not sure how long it's been there. Also, I don't know when you were 4 :). Because it's the original, the bagels may or may not be better than at the other locations. If it's the original, it's been there since 1935, according to bagelboss.com. It's odd how the Hicksville location isn't on bagelboss.com, but has it's own page at everyonelovesbagels.com. Maybe that means the bagels are different.

I'll have to try El Farolito (so many good ones...) Have you tried Taco the Town?
I will also have to try Delicious Food Co. for dim sum. Is it on Franklin in Chinatown? There's a whole row of Chinese bakeries on that street.

I've only been to Taco the Town one time, a long time ago, late night, pretty inebrieated. All I remember is things getting kinda tense when some cops came in to eat and started giving the stink-eye to some thug-looking patrons. Friends did always rave about the place, but i just never found myself nearby when the burrito jones struck.
The last time I was at the Honda/Kawasaki dealer across the street, it looked like it might be closed. Always sad to see a neighborhood place go out of business.
Delicious Food Co could be on Franklin. It's on the corner of Eighth, in the middle of Chinatown, I'm just not sure of the cross street. Not much seating, more of a 'grab it and go' place.

Well for myself, located South of Boston, my favorite is Giomatti's in Braintree, MA. It has great Italian food at a good price and with big portions. I love going into Boston's North End (which is like NY's Little Italy) to eat and Giomatti's is like being in the North End without the traffic!
My favorite local "big city" place is a tie between Massimino's and LaConte's in the Boston (again, the North End).
Anyone here from the Charlotte, NC area? One of the best places I have ever eaten was down there at Frank Manzetti's steak house. It was fantastic!

Let me see if I can get this right....
Fortune used to be on Route 7, between Columbia Pike and Route 50. This is the one I am assuming you drove past. Fortune moved to Seven Corners (on 50, where it meets 7). It took over the building that used to be a Fuddruckers, right next to the Home Depot of Sniper fame. The old Fortune became Maxim's Palace, and they serve Dim Sum as well. In my opinion, not as good, but still better than most. Its not as crowded as Fortune, so we still go if the line at Fortune is too long.
