Secondhand Tivo with turbonet card already installed won't connect to TIVO service

So I buy this Philips HDR 612 from this guy. The modem's fried, but he installed the Turbonet card. I say 'great, I'll just plug it into my Linksys router and it will connect to the Tivo service over my cable modem connection.' Apparently not (even after activating the Tivo service).
Here is what I suspect is going on and I'm hoping someone can help:
The NIC is installed fine and it has the version 3.0.x software and the dialing prefix has been changed to (,#401). I don't know if the unit still thinks its calling even though it goes through my cable modem connection, but it's configured for an east coast dial up number. I can't seem to change it without it wanting to call out to get a new local phone number. when I try to make a "daily call now," it of course says 'Failed. Service unavailable.' How can I get it to connect to the Tivo service? Is it supposed to do this automatically? Should I give up and return the unit?

I wouldnt return it just yet as I noticed on the forum that people have had problems before getting their turbonet connected tivos to contact tivo over the internet. Sometimes it that your tivo doesnt know the default gateway. To fix this you would need to be able to either access the bash prompt and type /sbin/route add default gw <IP address of your gateway> and press return. The other fix would be to rerun the install program (if it is a 9th Tee sold card). If you can force a call after adding the gateway and it works then it was the lack of the default gateway. if not, then I am stumped as I use the modem to connect.
hope this helps.

Assuming it's a standard installation, if you type nic_config_tivo at the Bash prompt you should be able to configure gateways and use of the modem.

Also make sure the card itself is seated well. That was my issue when I first got my card.

I was just having a similar problem after not using my Series 1 for a few months. Turns out that the router/fileserver gadget I've begun using in the meantime has a transparent WWW proxy. TiVo apparently doesn't like to be proxied, since as soon as I changed the configuration so TiVo would be allowed to connect directly, the test call worked.
For most people with standard Linksys/D-Link routers, this post will be useless, but for those trying to use a Toshiba Magnia or other transparent proxy, it might be handy to know that TiVo doesn't play well with proxies.
