First Week Winners and Losers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: GoodN

The first week of the new season is almost over and I was wondering what everyone would have on their list of Winners and Losers. I pick "The West Wing" as my winner of the week. I watched the episode live, and added it to my SP list as soon as it ended. My loser of the week is a toss up between "Navy NCIS" and "ER"

And I reserve the right to change my picks after watching "Alias" and "The Practice" tonight!

Posted by: Maui

My winner of the week is (tenative as I have yet to catch CSI, Lyons Den, Cold Case or L&O: CI)

West Wing for returning shows
Tie between Joan of Arcadia and Miss Match as winner among new shows.
Loser so far - Two and a Half Men (although I rarely watch sitcoms so I am sure there are even worse ones)

Posted by: pkscout

The Handler was my big loser of the week. I loved the premise, but the two story lines were pretty predictable, had little suspense, and made me seriously consider fast forwarding through some parts.

I obviously haven't seen Alias yet, but I think that will be my big winner. My big emotional winner goes to 8 Simple Rules. I actually moved it to the top of my Season Pass list so I wouldn't miss the last three episodes with John Ritter (or maybe, mercifully, the last three episodes period).

Posted by: loubob57

Threat Matrix for big loser. My BS flag wore out on that first episode.

Posted by: bareyb

Of the NEW shows for the Fall Season:

Winners:
Carnivale
K Street
Joan of Arcadia

Losers:
Coupling
The Handler
Hope and Faith

I expect to like Cold Case and Lyons Den as well...

Loser--Threat Matrix
I'll decide winner after Alias premiere tonight.

Loser - Hope & Faith Shrill characters and Ted McGinley to boot. No SP here....

Posted by: cello

put Cold Case in my losers list. not because I think it's a bad show (didn't make it through enough of it to tell), but because I realized that I can't stomach one more detective show. Just too much.

Posted by: TIVO_GUY_HERE

Big loser from this week, last week, ANY week is the mullets, my god....

Posted by: njtaz

The Handler not as good as I thought.
ER was so-so as was NYPD Blue, JAG and NCIS.

The best show o fhte week so far is definitely ALIAS, though I still haven't watched Cold Case or the practice, but I doubt either will be as good.

I was seven minutes into it when I deleted it.

I don't expect every show on TV to be wholly original and groundbreaking. But when they don't even bother to put real people on the screen. . . Sheesh. This one was straight from 1980s stock sitcom land. *Bad* stock sitcom land.

My big winner - Survivor
I had every intention of watching the first week and then getting bored with it and not coming back, but they actually got a really good cast this year and the pirate thing is actaully better than I thought it would be.
Others with a strong start -
8 Simple Rules
Raymond
Las Vegas
MI5

My big loser - K Street
I thought this was going to be very interesting and it turned out to be really boring. The non-actors either sound confused or are reading from a script and they can't act, and the interaction with the actors seems contrived.

On the fence -
Brotherhood of Poland New Hampshire
Carnivale
ER
Ed

All shows I'll give another look and most likely ride out the season.

Posted by: pkscout

OK, I changed my mind after watching Alias last night. Survivor is my big winner now. My wife and I have liked the work they've done to introduce new twists this year.

Don't get my wrong, I liked Alias, but the season premiere was too much like the series premiere and some of the character changes were just too abrupt and not well explained. Yes, they have the whole season, but it wasn't good enough to be the big winner for me.

Posted by: acropolis

Winners:
Returning:
West Wing
CSI
Enterpr... I mean Star Trek: Enterprise
Survivor
New:
I'm With Her
MI-5 (does it count?)
Nip/Tuck (ditto)
Lucky (bring it back!)

Losers:
Returning:
Law & Orders: all of them (same old, same old)
NBC - for screwing with everyones sense of time
New:
Luis - OMG does this show suck

Updating my post to make Alias the winner!!

I'll stick with new shows since I won't give up on ER or Survivor. Or even Bachelor Bob.

Winners: I'm with Her
Las Vegas
George Lopez (most improved show since first Pilot)

Losers: Carnivale (I will keep it an SP for a little while to see if it gets
better)

Posted by: RisenNDeed

I have yet to see:

Lyon's Den
ER
Cold Case
Without a Trace
The District

So I don't have much to go on...

Winner:
West Wing - I don't watch it, but I did catch most of the opener and I'm fairly pulled in. I can't add it to my already buldging list, but it was a good episode.

Loser:
Ed - I've watched since the first show, but I almost cancelled my SP this week....time will tell.

Posted by: philw1776

Winners:
American Dreams
CSI LV
Without a Trace

So-so:
L&O the original
L&O Criminal Intent

Losahs:
CSI Miami (unwatchable)

Posted by: ufo4sale

Winners:
Everwood
Alias
Without a trace
Survivor

Posted by: JTAnderson

I'll vote for "The Practice" in the most improved category.

No clear winners among the new series. I sort of liked "The Handler" and "Joan of Arcadia".

Biggest losers, "Whoopi" and "Hope and Faith".

Torture me as much as you wish, I won't admit to having watched even a little bit of "The Mullets".

Posted by: okleydokley

I would say that all the comedies ended up as losers (the laugh tracks are getting louder and more obnoxious all the time).. I am really looking forward to Scrubs on Thursday hoping this will be the only good comedy this year..

I was pleased with Survivor, CSI, Las Vegas, and Without a Trace, but someone needs to get some better writers for the comedies...

Posted by: mwhip

Winners:

Las Vegas
Everwood
Still Standing
I'm with her
Ed
The Brotherhood of Poland NH
Miss Match

Losers:
Boston Public
Coupling
Whoopi
Happy Family

They are going to have to move something on Friday's. I wan't to watch "Joan of Arcadia" but I am already recording "Miss Match" and "Wanda at Large".

Posted by: Marc

I had three surprise winners and one surprise loser.

The winners are Like Family (I set up a Season Pass for it within 5 minutes or so), Joan of Arcadia (I wasn't expecting to like it), and I'm With Her (which really surprised me because I thought I was going to hate it, but I really enjoyed it).

The surprise loser is Cold Case. I thought I would have liked it from its premise, but the lead character just doesn't thrill me. I'd rather have the extra room for Suggestions.

Posted by: daperlman

losers: Boston Public and the Practice

I think they are putting something in the cocaine that David Kelly snorts.

The new character on the practice is totally ridiculous, are his sexual advances toward every woman
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
including telling a defendant that he whacked off with her likeness in mind
supposed to be funny.

As for Boston Public, I believe the new Friday night time slot speaks for itself.

Posted by: Trent Bates

I'm also thinking that Cold Case is a loser. I got bored about halfway through and skipped to the end. At the end, I realized that I didn't care enough to see how it turned out. I deleted it.

I'm a little shocked at my response to this show. I usually try to stick it out. In contrast, It took me three days to finish Threat Matrix but I DID finish it.

Posted by: niferbee

Winners -
West Wing
Alias
Gilmore Girls (just can't give up that one)

Jury is still out
Miss Match
Lyon's Den
Joan of Arcadia - missed the pilot, will watch this week

Definitely Not
Cold Case - too 'showy' It really annoyed me how they kept making the character's moooovve slllloooooww
Whoopi - didn't really care for the pilot ep enough to remember to rerecord it

My thoughts:

Winners (great):
West Wing
Alias

New shows worth watching (ok):
Threat Matrix - even with the ridiculous 'technology' leaps, I found the show entertaining
I'm With Her - kinda 'Notting Hill'-like
Coupling - even if it's just to compare to the BBC originals (which are hysterical!)
Jake 2.0
Las Vegas

Yuck! Puke! Retch!:
Hope & Faith - REALLY, horribly, bad.
K Street - boooooooorr-ing.
CSI: Miami - Caruso is still a hack...

Returning shows that must be watched:
Star Trek: Enterprise
Frasier
Friends
Survivor: Pearl Islands - well, sort of returning....
Boomtown
Charmed
ER
Angel
Scrubs
24
Simpsons
Malcolm in the Middle

New shows still to be watched:
Carnivale
Joan of Arcadia
Miss Match
Navy NCIS - not all that interested anyway, may delete before watching
Brotherhood of Poland, N.H.
The Handler
Cold Case
The Lyon's Den
Karen Sisco
Skin
Tru Calling

Yikes, I gotta get rolling thru some of these! I count ~26 hours of shows PER WEEK, if I don't weed some out. And hockey season hasn't even started yet! ;)

Decisions, decisions.

Posted by: cwoody222

Winners:

Survivor
Joan of Arcadia
Miss Match
Brothers of Poland, NH

Losers:
Threat Matrix
any new sitcom
Cold Case (verdict still out for me)
"new" Enterprise

Waiting to see:
Las Vegas
Carnivale

Most anxious for but was slightly underwhelmed:
the return of Alias

Posted by: scottjf8

Good : OC, Las Vegas, Good Morning Miami (first show but wasn't bad for sophomore season)
On the Fence : 8 Simple Rules (was looking bad before JR's death, and will get worse when it comes back)

Bad : Friends

OK, I've been procrastinating about replying to this thread, because it really depressed me. The question made me realize that I'm not really liking any show that much this year, even the things I really wanted to love. Alias was good, but didn't light me on fire the way it used to. The West Wing feels like your good friend who survived a brain injury - still alive, still looks and acts mostly the same, but their personality is slightly different and you just don't click the way you used to. All the new things I've watched (Handler, Las Vegas, Lyon's Den, Joan of Arcadia, Cold Case) have promise but only if they can conquer some significant flaws. Grr. So, here's my list:

Winner of the week:
I hate to say it, but Survivor is the thing I'm most looking forward to seeing again.

Loser of the week:
Two and a Half Men

Best things recently (that didn't premiere last week):
MI-5
The Wire (best show on television!)

Haven't watched yet but still holding out hope for:
Karen Sisco
Angel

Posted by: drew2k

Big winners for me, always leaving me wanting more:
- Carnivale
- The O.C. (also the biggest surprise for me - who knew it would be so good?)

In jeopardy of losing SP status:
- West Wing
- ER

Shows started and immediately deleted:
- Whoopi
- Jake 2.0

Giving some time to grow:
- Happy Family
- Coupling

Still haven't seen this season, but looking forward to:
- Las Vegas
- Alias
- Lyon's Den
- Smallville

Out of the new shows, while I have enjoyed some, I do not have any clear winners yet, ie..have not added any to my SP list yet, though I do have Nip & Tuck and MI-5 if those are counted as "new" shows.

However, one of the reasons I have not added anything is due to the increase in shows being offered in HD. Instead of SP'ing every thing I like, I am planning what to record and what to watch in HD a day or two ahead of time...so some of the new shows I like that I would have added to SP, but instead either watch in HD or Tivo on a day by day basis are:

Las Vegas
Threat Matrix (I think it's ok, as I don't care that it's not realistic.)
Joan of Arcadia
Karen Sisco (which I thought was ok yesterday)
Navy NCIS
Jake 2.0

The following are still in my SP from last year, though on occasion this year, I may watch via HD rather than through Tivo.

Everwood
Third Watch
American Dreams
Alias
Without a Trace
Both CSI's
ER
Jag
West Wing
Boomtown

An update from my earlier list....and it seems I'm in the minority but my Big Loser is Joan of Arcadia - what a bore.

Posted by: sieglinde

I liked George (whatisname) It is on Fridays and the main character is a Mexican-American first level manager in a factory. I have only seen the episode where Bush visits the factory.

You mean "The Lopez that we're not all sick of?"

Posted by: sieglinde

Oh yeah. George isn't in the news all day and seems to have authentic talent.

Posted by: johnjohn

I watched both episodes of 10-8 back to back: quality show with a nice, tight focus. I really thought that I couldn't handle another cop show, but 10-8 is quite different from all the other ones out there.

Posted by: JYoung

Winners:
10-8
Mythbusters
Miss Match

Probation but will probably keep:
L.A. Dragnet
Las Vegas
Jake 2.0 (as I expect it to be cancelled)

Probation but will probably drop:
Lyon's Den

Not Sure why I keep it:
Enterprise

Losers:
Hope and Faith
Whoopi
Any other show on UPN

Posted by: mrs-j

Winners:
2 1/2 men
Frasier
I'm With Her
Survivor

Losers:
Whoopi!
Happy Family

Posted by: Maui

Mrs-J,

I know you have gone against the popular opinion of a few shows this season (I seem to remember Ed being an example) so just to show you that you are not the only one who can do so I will admit to liking, in spite of many denouncers in this thread, Cold Case.

Posted by: niferbee

I am going to give Cold Case one more week. We accidentally left the SP on our TIVO and watched the second ep.

If it's predictable the third week as it was the first two, it's gone.

Posted by: Todd

New Winners so far:
Jake 2.0
I'm with Her

New on Fence:
2.5 Men
Las Vegas
Coupling
Hope and Faith (First episode was horrible, second one was better)

New Goners:
Navy:NCIS
Threat Matrix
