Mutant X - Season Premiere jumps the shark twice

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ugh!

I can't believe all the cast changes this season. Only 3 of the regulars returned. The new cast member just too conveniently appears and takes control of the team.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

Emma dies in the opening scene, covered in a sheet. Adam is presumed dead until Eckhart lures the team out with his signal to trick them into giving up a bunch of data. Eckhart confirms Adam's body is charred beyond recognition.

Delete Season Pass.

I am also very upset about this. I can see one of them dying but not both. I really like this show to. I don't know what to do now:(

Posted by: WinBear

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

And it looks like they've killed Eckhart. This completely wrecks the premise of the series. There's no recurring bad guys left.

Posted by: ufo4sale

I don't know if you watch x-men evolution but the same thing happened on that show to.

Posted by: jones07

I'm kind of surprise that this show has an adult following. I thought this show had more of a male teenager comic book reader demographics

Posted by: Graymalkin

Boy, that Karen Cliche is the syndicated flavor of the month, huh? First Adventure Inc. and now this. Bleah. I guess Tessie ("Queen of Swords") Santiago wasn't fired from Good Morning, Miami soon enough to get the job.

Posted by: HTH

Just wait until it does a double backwards somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the Star Spangled Banner.

Oh, and there were three jumps:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Eckhart is finally dead too. And, shockingly, the members of Mutant X are now killing people deliberately: hands bloody from ramming them into someone's guts and electrocuting a wheelchair-bound female mutant.

Posted by: vertigo235

Wow, this show actually lasted a season? I thought it was a series premiere.

This used to be a guilty pleasure, but now it's all guilt and no pleasure...

I watched it twice last season and decided this was made for the MTV generation an was not for me. But it's still on the air so somebody must be watching an enjoying it. More power to them. I once thought Lost In space, Time Tunnel and The Land of the Giants was all that :p

Yeah, I noticed that too and it bothered me.

Zap2it has an interview with Karen Cliche.

There needs to be something that makes Enterprise look good....
:p

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! (Jumping the shark, that is. Unless a show was great, becomes sucky, then becomes great again. Because jumping the shark is the moment when a great show turns sucky.)

And in the case of Mutant X, which was pretty much born on the other side of the shark, I would question whether there could even BE one!

Posted by: allan

I haven't seen the latest Mutant X yet, but jugding by those spoilers, I may cancel my SP. I kinda liked the show, but this season sure sounds like shark-bait. :(

Jumps The Shark !
Could someone clue in a 45 year old the meaning of this. I thought I would pick up on the meaning of this term as the thread moved on...But no luck so far.

Thanks :)

It's generally agreed that "Happy Days", er, jumped the shark when Fonzie literally jumped over a shark! After that the show went downhill, and that phrase was used whenever a show turned bad.

Posted by: jones07

Thanks for taking the time to clue me in.

I must have missed that Happy Days episode. I stop watching back when Fonzie became almost Q like :p

I didn't know this show was still around. Is this the second or third season?

Posted by: WinBear

This is the 3rd season. All the mutants got a power upgrade at the end of the 1st season and Eckhart was put in cold storage for most of season 2.

Posted by: vertigo235

3rd season!?! Yeesh, I was just able to beleive it lasted 1 season, you mean this thing lasted 2 seasons?

Unreal, but I guess it is the WB.

Uh, no, it's not. It's syndication.

SPOILERS TO THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE SHOW YET.....

OK. Here's my take.....

I don't think the show jumped the shark, because jumping a shark has to be outrageously ridiculous within the show's context. Granted, the season opener was kind of lame with the new person conveniently appearing. But that's just bad writing, not shark jumping.

I can't blame them too much for introducing a new person. I have a feeling they didn't kill off Emma and Adam as much as those two actors just didn't renew their contracts. I don't like the new person. I'm happy to see Adam gone, but not Emma. And considering how secretive and manipulative Adam was in the past, I don't think I would have stayed with him that long.

As for Mutant X killing people..... it's about time! I'm sorry, but that's the most believable thing I've seen to date on the show. These people just lost two of their closest friends directly because of Eckhart, one of them had his mind totally violated, and they were all about to be killed by direct orders of Eckhart. How much more is anyone going to take before he finally kills someone who is actively trying to kill him? That psychic that was tearing apart his mind was an evil, sadistic b*tch. I guarantee you, if I was in Brennan's shoes, I would have killed that psychic, the mutant about to kill him, and Eckhart. I'm not a violant person, and I really don't condone deadly force unless it's necessary, but those people just went too far. If my best friends had been killed by them, and they were torturing me and about to kill me and my remaining friends, they would be toast. No question about it.

Yeah, the show is cheesy. But that's the beauty of Tivo. I can watch cheesy shows that I normally wouldn't take the time out to watch because I can just watch them when there's nothing else to see. And even though it's cheesy, I get a kick out of it.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

On the web site, Lauren Smith (Emma) is listed as a "former castmember", while Adam and Eckhart are listed as Special Guest Stars/Recurring Roles. We'll be seeing more of Adam and Eckhart I'm sure.

The actress who played Emma was reportedly shocked at not being brought back.

That's odd. I thought Emma was a great character and showed a lot of potential. She was starting to come out of her shell and get pretty aggressive. Also, having a psionic on the team would mesh out their abilities pretty well. I don't see where the new girl would have nearly as much to offer.

Damn writers, messing up a good.. err.... adequate.. thing!

They probably wanted somebody sluttier...

naww, now they have two sluts to cat fight over Victor Webster........ ;)

So the actress that played EMMA was fired? Why would they do that I just don't understand.
Is everyone sure Adam is dead. They still showed him in the opening credits, he even narrates it. If he is gone to I will delete my season pass.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

Adam will be back, just not as a regular. I think Shea didn't want to be on every week. As for Emma, I wasn't joking when I said they probably wanted somebody sluttier.

Posted by: bobcarn

The show to me is kind of like a cheap pleasure. You know.... like eating cookie dough, or indulging in a bad cheap novel that you know isn't good, but you still get a kick out of. Killing off the cast this year and introducing the new characters wasn't as blatant an attempt to improve the show as last year's. Remember how they all "mutated" simultaneously and their powers increased? Adam's theory was that they were all still in a state of ongoing mutation. But c'mon..... they all had a power boost simultaneously? A cheap tactic (but that just adds to the cheap pleasure :p )

Posted by: JYoung

well, at least it allows Shea to do next weeks Law & Order.

Posted by: HTH

Maybe they felt the Emma character was getting too powerful and didn't feel they could maintain tension with her there anymore.

Then again, they could bring back the character later by having her having had just transcended her physical body in another mutant power boost. Or contrive a parallel universe story where she didn't die. Or a parallel universe/time travel story where she gets sent back in time and has a mutant daughter in the past that looks just like her despite being half-Romulan.

Posted by: allan

I thought they were going somewhere with Emma's increasing power. That WAS part of the tension last season. I think the above mentioned shark is licking its chops!

Heh! No, but judging from the date on her post, that's probably the über-source of the story I read (can't remember where--SciFi.com? Dark Horizons?).

Personally, I was never a big fan of Emma, but I don't think they've improved the show with her replacement.

Posted by: landrumdh

I'm not the only one that finds this a guilty pleasure I see.

This new season is interesting. I really like Karen and also found Adventure Inc kind of interesting. Sad on how the show ended though with one of the cast members dying :(

But Adam is listed as a reoccuring guest star I definatly agree that he's not dead. And anybody who caught this weekends episode might be thinking what I'm thinking about why Karen was interested in that lady and how she can help ;)
