We have Tivo Engineers.

We have people and Companies who do Professional upgrades.

We have Advanced users who have been around since the first Tivo.

There are so many smart people in this forum, it is really hard to believe that I've never gotten an answer to any of my problems.

Maybe the board is just too big?

Anyway, I have ententually stumbled onto some of my own answers. I'll post the problems here and the solutions. Maybe some of you will do the same.

Lost Background Animations:

When I got my new Series2 TiVo's last March, I immediately did a backup an installed a larger "A" disk. When I restarted my TiVo, there were no background animations. I could browse every menu on my TiVo, while still watching Now Playing or Live TV.

(Some people think this is kewl, if you want to do this yourself, simply backup using the Series1 method, in the MFS docs.)

I hated this and I could not go back, because I had restored my backup to the original disk. Bad.

I posted my question and got some comments, but no answers.

Solved.

I simply made a backup of my other Series2 TiVo that looked good, and restored to the one that looked bad. Now after 6 months things are normal again.

If you're claiming that no-one suggested that you re-image, then that's not entirely true.

My SA 14 hour TiVo was not turned on for months, I gave it to my nephew. We booted it and went through GS (Guided Setup)....almost. Thats right:

Stuck in Guided Setup

I called TiVo support. They were intentionally no help "Oh, your unit is modified..." $19.00 wasted. Modifications had nothing to do with it. I had not even removed the lid until I had the the problem.

The specific problem was that on the first phone call to load the telephone numbers, after "Downloading" the indexing would freeze with "failed while loading series" as the error message.

We tried, Kick Starting (Several Times) which is supposed to rebuild the database, yeah right. We also remove the battery to the bios (no effect).

Finally we took a backup of an old 30 hour SA Tivo and restored it. To our surprise. It worked. It's been golden for the last three months.

Thanks for the comment Robert, but look at the thread. No one suggested the you could use the image from another TiVo. I stated that I had another unit, still no one came forward and said, "Well dumbass, use that one!"

The thread seems to indicate that I missed some files. As I aptly stated in the other thread "DOH!" :)

Tip: Your Tivo Service Number is not located on your Hard Drive. It's located on your Motherboard.

This one tip answers multitudes of questions.

btw - the less extreme fix for this is to tell mfsbackup to keep more FSIDs (-f 4138?) on your mfsbackup command.

I'm sorry that you didn't get this question answered - I swear I've seen this around.

Yes, but doing that would burn your recordings. What he wanted was to extract the missing files and insert them on to the TiVo and thus avoid reimaging. It turns out that's trickier than he thought.

DEVNULL: Great tip. No I've not seen that around.

Robert S: Yes, you hit the nail on the head. That was exactly the problem and probably why I did not get an answer.

Actually I have had the said prob with the -f 4138. I changed it to -f 9999 it worked well.

It depends which model you have. For the HDVR2 (I think) 4138 captures all the nessary files. For later DTiVo2's it turns out that you need 9999 to get them. As 9999 shouldn't be 'worse' than 4138, it's now the recommended setting for all Series 2 backups.

If you want better answers to any question include this information:

Manufaturer:

Series 1 or 2:

Model Number:

Software Version:

I've gotten confusing answers because I did not provide enough info. Don't make this mistake.

If the TiVo has already been modified, tell us how, otherwise we'll assume it's in factory condition.

If you are trying to achieve something specific, say what you're trying to achieve.

If you've done something, tell us what you did.

If something happened when you did it, tell us happened. If that involved an error message, tell us about the error message (no need to reproduce three pages of output, usually just knowing what printed the error and what didn't work is enough).

It's not that the 'I upgraded my TiVo and now it doesn't work' posts aren't fun, but they really don't make the best use of the Forum.
