Eastenders canceled

I hate to admit it, but I'm a closet fan of this show from the BBC. BBCAmerica cancelled the program on 9/27 and I'm going through withdrawl. any other Eastenders fans here?

I used to watch it on PBS (don't have digital so I can't get BBC America). I finally gave up watching it because I got tired of my husband bitching (he was having trouble following what was going on).

Too bad I didn't have TiVo then -- would have made it much easier to record the show & watch it when he wasn't home. :(

I just got back from a two week visit in the UK (my wife's a Brit) and you wouldn't believe what's going on --Dirty Den is Back!! After 15 years or so, he's been resurected from the grave.

I was never much of a EE fan, but after 8 years in England it kind of grows on you--yes, Coronation Street too.

Anyway, thought you might be interested.

dlperki, please let me know how they managed to bring Dirty Den back ?

Big fan here - my wife as well. We've been looking forward to Dens re-appearence for the past few months and just before it happens BBCAmerica dropped the show without any warning. I'm going through withdrawal big time :(

As for Den coming back basically Den Jnr knows his address (got it from the crook he killed). They bring Vicky back from the states and she finds out and goes looking for him. Vicky brings him back. Sharon's not best pleased to find he's alive and kicking.

If you are a fan of Eastenders and watched it on BBC America, please be sure to sign the petition to bring it back. The petition has upwards of 12,000 now. BBC America needs to know how many people actually enjoyed this show.

I never thought I'd ever be signing a petition for a Soap *gasp*

When they dropped Top of The Pops the petition has 30,000 sigs and they did not bring it back.

Technically that means they are accountable to the British TV License payers. I'm one so they should be accountable to me!!!!!!

I don't think BBC America is directly linked to the BBC. I think it is some kind of separate corporation. Many of the shows they show are not BBC shows.

Edit:

Here's a chat transcript explaining why Eastenders was pulled and that BBC America has to purchase shows from BBC since the license payers paid for the show originally.

BBCAmerica is a division of BBC Worldwide which is the commercial arm and a wholly owned subsidiary of the BBC. Its principle goal is to raise revenue for the BBC as one of its as part of it commitment to keep the license fee as low as possible.

Given this the argument that Eastenders costs too much is a strictly paper argument, especially when they really pay for external programming such as "Faking it" and "So Graham Norton".

<rant>
Another argument is that the viewer figures are based on Neilsen ratings. Neilsen ratings are dubious enough (or should I say have little statistical significance) for a small cable channel, especially when a good portion of that channels audience is made up of non-us citizens or residents (despite being legal) that stand no chance of being Neilsen families. Do advertisers really care if they are targeting American residents or consumers. I know a lot of Americans and a lot of Brits in America. All the Brits watch BBC America and none of the Americans. BBC America don't seem to understand their market.
</rant>

Despite everything I'm mostly upset because I've personally watch the show since its inception 18 years ago and now I cannot see it any more.

I feel your pain. I have to resort to watching episodes from 1999 that are shown on WLVT out of Lehigh Valley PA.

Thanks - we don't seem to be on our own.

Wouldn't it be great if all of registered members here signed the petition? Even if you don't watch Eastenders, help out a fellow member :)
