Or is all that's possible for me to do is add HD space? I'm interested in getting ftp, bash, etc. on it, but it doesn't seem that there's a way to do that currently under version 4 (or am I just being pessimistic?)

Yes, it can be hacked. The initial software released for the Series2 has a security hole. A technique called two-kernel monte boots off the old software and then makes it run the new software. Details are here.
