Does the upgrade change a drives firmware?

Hi all,

I updated my tivo's hard drive with an 80 GB harddrive.(Yes, I installed it myself after using those utilities to format it for my Tivo.) Anyway the drive went south on me after a year so I was going to return it to maxtor for a replacement. However I couldn't test it out with their software.(It kept showing up as 9MB on my PC.) So anyway after talking to them for a while they told me they wouldn't warrenty the drive since formatting process altered the firmware on the drive. Was the technician talking out of his butt or is he right and that the firmware is altered? If not any idea why I can only see 9MB of the hard drive even though it's 80 GB?(I've already replaced the drive with a 120GB drive so it's not like I need it any time soon. Still it'd be nice to get my 80GB drive replace.)

No, this is the TiVo's drive locking feature (there's a whole thread on it a bit further down). Once the drive has locked (but not before) you should be able to use qunlock to reset the drive's firmware.

Us TiVo enthusiasts regard the Maxtor drives as faulty, not the TiVo :)

Thanks for the info. Found the other thread. Guess someone can close this thread now.

Nah, threads aren't closed unless they contravene the posting guidelines.

We'll just wait for someone to add another post in 2005 or so...

From what I have read on the subject, I don't think you are supposed to use qunlock on Maxtor drives. Qunlock was for the old Quatum drives. Here is a link to a thread discussing not using qunlock on Maxtor, it ruins the drive.

Have you read the whole thread or just the first page?
