Need help upgrading a Series 1 with a WD 120 Gig

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Everything went fine as far as the backup and restore to my new WD 120 Gig. I have the original series 1 14 hr Tivo. I followed the instructions exactly and got no error messages, but when I put the new HD into my tivo (I've tried both Master and Master w/ Slave jumper settings) it just hangs on the very first screen. Is there a way to check a log or something to make sure the backup and restore went like it was supposed to?

Thank You!

Does it still work with the original drive?

A cable or jumper problem is most likely. What cable are you using?

yes, it still works with the original drive. after doing a bit of research i read that the WD drives have to be set to "master with slave." even doing that it gets stuck at the first screen :( Oh, and I'm using the original cable that is in the tivo. should i maybe try backup/restore again?

I don't suppose there's anyone around Iowa City, IA that would want to help me is there?

i tried to just start over and re-do the entire procedure and now when i try to mfsrestore i get an error about not being able to reach partitions? help please

Should I somehow reformat the new drive? What would be the best way to do that? Maybe the drive is bad? I'm so lost...

You'd only use 'master with slave' if there was a B drive.

You'd expect to see errors about an invalid partition signature when the MFS Tools CD boots due to byteswapping issues. I don't see why mfsrestore wouldn't work.

You can download a diagnostic utility from the Western Digital website.

I'm running the diagnostic program as we speak and I get a:

"element error while handling" contact technical support

I also notied the plastic piece around the IDE connection on the new drive is broken. I guess my new drive is damaged... :(

I think that clears up that little mystery.

You should find getting the drive replaced is very easy. It's when they're a few years old and full of data that it gets ugly!
