How about "Erase as you watch" feature?

My TiVo currently has the Judy Garland made-for-tv biopic on it. The thing is four-hours long...you all know how much room that is on a TiVo at medium quality.

THe problem is that everytime I schedule another recording, I get the warning about having to erase other shows earlier than intended.

I am watching this film a little bit each night...

What would be nice is to be able to erase portions of shows you've already watched. So when I finished watching the first hour of a recorded movie, I could erase that portion and free up space. Has anyone else recommended this?

I like this idea too. You can manually accomplish the same type of concept if you periodically stop and start recording longer programs. You can then delete the sections.

I would rather have a delete from beginning to here and a delete from here to end choice to trim a program. Clear out what you have watched from the beginning, clear out what you aren't going to watch from the end(for example a sport event you added on a hour to compensate for overtime or rain delay).

This would also be nice if you wanted to save a short segment like a news story from a long program. Say you were going to be on the news so you save the whole program at best and just want to keep your 2 sec of fame as you walked past the reporter while she was talking....

The ability to edit. A great feature indeed!

My understanding is it's not impossible but is a really big deal technically to implement due to the way HD recorders are formatted. (But I'm a relatively ignorant non-techie.)

My understanding by reading between the lines from RB is that they could do this but it wouldn't clear up as much data as you might think if you only skim out a small portion. I think the TiVo must have blocks of time that get allocated or something and while the data could be erased from viewing it wouldn't all become available for recording.
(I also think this is part of the reason that Free Space Indicator isn't there, but it is hard enough to get past the arguments against even having one to bring up the fact that it might show that the box isn't as big as one thinks once it gets used a bit).

All speculation from someone who knows nothing....

There's another angle to this here:

Any recording greater then 2 hours, I break up into chunks. I do all manual recordings so its no big deal adding 1 or two more.

A break into chunks feature might not be a bad idea also. Sporting events I always break up into chunks.
