Jamie's Kitchen

Has anyone else caught this show on Food Network? It's an English version of the Restaurant, but with Jamie Oliver (Naked Chef, Oliver's Twist).
There are only five episodes, and should appeal to the BBC crowd in here.

Really? I'll have to check it out.
What's with Food network changing his show around all the time?

I don't know why they are always re-inventing his show. I don't think his show is made for Food Network, I believe they just buy the rights.

I'm really hunting and pecking my way through the episodes, missing as much of the drama as I can, but I am enjoying it! I think I only have one more episode to go, but it looks like they are repeating the 5 episode series, over and over again, the next week or so.
If you thought you might enjoy The Restaurant, it is worth a TiVo. :)

I really enjoy Jamie's show "Oliver's Twist", and I'm sort of enjoying this show. The only problem, these young people mumble when they talk, and it's very hard to understand them. I can understand Jamie just fine, but the kid's are really bad!
I think I would have dumped most of the kid's after a few weeks, for lack of trying and not having any ambition.
I know Jamie is trying to help these people, but I think they need to help themselves first. He is bending over backward for them, and they just don't seem to care.

I almost became a chef, and a lot of what Jamie says to these kids rings true. Unless you are ready for cooking to become your life, you don't need to be in it.
I was not ready to give up every holiday, and work 16 hour days.
And of course they mumble, their English.

Jamie's in town today, signing his book. He sat in all morning on one of our morning news shows. They did a bunch of food-related segments (the movie reviwer did movies about cooking) and it was a ton of fun.
Jamie hasn't seen Eat Drink Man Woman! Jan Wahl was egging him on to watch the movies she had recommended with the kids and use them as teaching tools. ;)
New cookbook looks fun -- it's an offshoot of the work he's done at the restaurant, having to explain how to do stuff to the kids.

Wait. Was Friday the last show? Last time I looked, my Tivo hadn't picked up any more episodes. Then again, it's been falling behind on guide data.
If so, that was anti-climactic, to say the least. I'm hoping there's more.

My TiVo picked up the first two epsidoes, then missed one or two to conflicts, then picked up a another.. So, I am sort of seeing it out of order.. But it's really the only way I can see it all without waiting... I like the show.. It's pretty good.. I always liked Jamies style as well.

The OADs were all old, if I recall - Feb 2003? Anyway, you'll notice that one segment -- episode 2? -- is on his baby being born, which was at least a year ago. So apparently this preceded "The Restaurant" but is just airing now.

Oh yes. This precedes the restaurant by at least a year. I remember seeing an ep of Jamie's Kitchen on a a Singapore Airlines flight in the early part of this year.

The recap is called Return to Jaime's Kitchen.. Not sure when it will air though. After finding out about Jaime's Kitchen makes me wonder about the Resturante
Info on Return to Jaime's Kitchen:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Yet more stress for Jamie as youngsters haemorrhage from his restaurant and his wife, Jools, gives birth — thankfully not in the kitchen. "They've all gone and I haven't been able to keep them. I feel let down down by myself," wearily comments the chef. Of the 15 who started out, only seven remain and morale is low. To top it all Jamie and Jools go and call the new arrival Daisy Boo.

The Food Network showed this as a 5-hour marathon on Saturday (10/25). Great stuff. If you had any interest in "The Restaurant" you should really check it out.

What I loved most was how when the restuarant opened, Jamie was IN THE KITCHEN rather than Rocco, who just roamed around the restaurant sucking up to people. Then he wonders why people had issues.
I thought the show was good, but it lacked some flow, and seemed somewhat choppy. I also found it amusing how everyone ripped the kids and Jamie gave them warning after warning but was really unable to can many who should have been.

When Jamie ran into cash flow problems before the restaurant opened, you could really see him sweating about how he was going to come up with the cash. Rocco was able to snap his fingers and say "call American Express and they will take care of it" but it wasn't that easy for Jamie.
I did a Google search for references to the Fifteen Restaurant in London and overall the reviews are still favorable, and there's currently a several-month wait for a dinner or lunch reservation. Jamie plans to open similar restaurants in New York and Sydney. Maybe he should open next door to Rocco and show him how it's done.
The show focused a lot on the "problem children" and hardly at all on the good students. That's TV, I guess.

How funny would that be if he did open one next to Rocco!

Jamie got an award from the Queen.

I really enjoyed the show. The British documentary style is so different from what we're used to.
As we were watching it, I turned to my partner and commented, "You just watch, Oliver thinks he's going to step in and save these kids by offering them such a great opportunity. I'll bet you that more than half of them fail." I especially liked the girl who was at the mall with her mom when Jamie called to inquire why she wasn't in class!
BTW...I tried to get into Fifteen last time I was in London, but they were booked solid. Oliver created a minor row when he turned Bill Clinton away at the door for not having a reservation.
