Dilemma about Pioneer DVR and archiving
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I so want one of those Pioneer DVD/TiVo units that I feel like a kid daydreaming about a new toy. However, I'm alarmed by the vision I have of later owning hundreds of little jewel boxes containing "must save" TV.
I'm afraid to revisit how life around here used to be, before we got TiVo, when a multitude of television shows were recorded on tape, new tapes were continually being purchased, and arguments arose over what could be recorded over, if anything.
TiVo has been a lifesaver in my household where I live with a media pack rat, because it acts like the dam on a reservoir; therefore encouraging us to just let programs get deleted if we don't get around to them. We have no desire to archive onto VHS from the TiVo, so I was just beginning to imagine the day when we might actually get rid of the bankers boxes full of VHS television recordings that live on the closet floor.

Set limits. Only allow certain shows that you actually think you might want to watch again someday to be archived. Nothing wrong with having a nice collection of quality movies, documentaries, concerts, and history-making events. However, most television is disposable - keep your perspective in check and it will stay that way!

And remember those slim jewel cases only take up about 1/6th the space required for a VHS tape. :)

I will indeed remember that if we end up with a DVD recorder, as I would likely ban those slim cases from the house! :) I see no way to have a visible label on the edge, so browsing the collection would mean pulling each one from the shelf to read the front while I grumble about how much has saved to DVD.
Having just looked at how many green circles appear in Now Playing on the living room Tivo with the big drive, the DVD/TiVo would certainly be handy.
