Which Series 1 to buy?

I was talking to Tivo CS on another issue, when I brought up that I wanted to buy another Tivo - but a used one. After questioning him about my options on a Series 1 model - he told me that some of the Series 1 machines do not need you to subscribe at all - they will manual record and be fine as an stand-alone unit. Is this true? Could I just buy another Tivo and not have to get an subscription (first tivo has lifetime sub). Oh, and if it is true, what model - he said he couldn't tell me. Thanks in advance -

Standalones with 1.3 version of software will do what the CS said. But, you may have a hard time finding one.

so I won't know what version software I have until I get the box - and the idea is that finding one that has that old of a model is slim to none - correct?

It doesn't matter what version of software the unit is running now, so long as it originally SHIPPED with 1.3 or lower. In fact, you'd want a unit running the latest software you can get. Units that shipped with 2.0 and higher can never be used without service, TiVo changed the software to no longer allow it, but older units come under a "grandfather" clause. There's a list of what units shipped with what here.
I see used Series 1 TiVo units come up all the time on eBay, and www.servicedvr.com sells reconditioned units.

I checked out your post link and I was already at that site looking at the models that they have. I want to buy my mother one for Christmas - I hope that she will buy the service herself. I also just wanted a "cheap" tivo to upgrade - I think these will work. any other links that might be helpfull for me to look for?
