Handspring Treo 600 -as good as TiVo!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: cyril

Finally got my hands on one!

Not been as excited (gadget-wise) since I got my Thomson TiVo!

More info at Treocentral.com.
Just need to get Orange to unlock the phone now.

The Casio M20 is also really cute.

Posted by: cyril

It seems many Treo 600 users have TiVo as their best gadget of all time, with the Treo 600 second.

Cyril

I have been looking at the new treo 600, but there is one thing that I can't workout from the info I've seen.

Can you use it like a conventional mobile? i.e. hold it up to your ear and speak or do you need to use a handsfree kit/speakerphone?

I know that the treo 270 (?) worked conventionally.

Thanks

Paul

Yes -it can be used as a conventional mobile. And you don't look daft using one. It's about the size and shape of a 3yr old candy bar mobile phone. Big, but not huge and a lot smaller than a 3G phone.

It's not like the Tungsten W - that requires a seperate cover to be purchased to act like a normal mobile.

Thanks

I was in London yesterday and now have one!

Looks pretty good so far - more or less exactly what I've been looking for for ages.

Good choice!
It's not perfect, but IMHO the best converged device on the market.

Here's some free software for the Treo 600 I wrote:

If you need any Treo software written, let me know.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get hold of a Treo 600 without buying one with an Orange phone contract?

It looks like a great device, but we live in an Orange zero reception area, and are looking for a replacement to our old Handspring Prism + VisorPhone thing.

O2 is our preferred network, but it doesn't look like they sell it - has anyone seen it for sale 'SIM-free' ?

Posted by: doogie

www.expansys.com sell them sim free but the site was down for maintenance when I just checked

Posted by: KeithMiller

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=105948

£203.52 with O2, available in 30 days

Posted by: doogie

Remember the £203 price is when you take out a 24 month contract - It's £321 on a 12 month contract or £438 sim free.

Posted by: cyril

I've got a spare unlocked one :)

Posted by: misterbleepy

as it looks from the Expansys site that O2 will be offering these soon, I think we'll wait and try get an upgrade deal on one (once we've ridden out the post christmas budget freeze).

I am having real probs trying to find a store which has a treo running so I can actually see the darn thing working.
Any ideas , I am sure I want one , well its a gadjet eh ;)

My main concern is surfing the net and how well it does it ???

One thing I would like to do is use it with the multimap site , dont suppose you could try it for me

or suggest a map program that would work well for the treo .

Another idea is that I have heard you can get a rough idea where you are using a mobil then txt a number which then tracks you down via the cell you have sent the msg from , its a sort of poor mans GPS any idea if this is true???

Cheers

Don't know about the service you mention, but the technology is there. The Orange WAP service has a "Find My Nearest" service a bit like Yellow Pages. You can either enter your location or tell it to use the location of the cell transmitter you're using.

The only time I used it I was in Bristol overlooking the Bristol Channel. The only problem was it thought I was in Wales. Those cell transmitters must be stronger than I thought!

Hi Richard

mmmm I have tried WAP and came to the conclusion it was CR*P rather than WAP :D
Unless they have much improved the service since about 7mths ago I found it really slow and not to have much info compared with the net.

Currently I use a phone + old Casio PDA to surf the net but its getting old and finding software that still works on it is very tricky also its a IR link which makes holding the phone and the PDA rather fun

The Treo browser will view regular HTML based websites as well as WAP. More and more of the popular sites seem to have a version formatted for the PDA screen and light on the graphics.

You can view pretty much any website, but some are worse than others about downsizing (for instance, I think the vBulletin sites like this one dont downsize well)

It's great for surfing.
There are a few issues with blazer, but these can be overcome by either using a different browser or a different proxy.

The main problem is that GPRS isn't too fast and costs 100 times more than in the USA, so streaming video and audio is not really an option due to cost.

If you use instant messengers like AOL, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo, it is still 10 to 100 times cheaper than sending SMS, and a lot mor useful as the chat is in real-time - most mobile companies in UK charge 16p -30p for international SMS so you will save a fortune if you use international SMS a lot. In fact it could easily pay for the cost of the phone very quickly.

The London A-Z covers 87 square miles, is VERY fast once loaded and has places of interest, hospitals, and every street name in its Find facility.

Much faster than using Multimap and Streetmap.co.uk and a lot cheaper if you use it a lot.

Not tried out GPS yet.
Not sure when the 'poor man's GPS' triangulation system will be released.

Push To Talk internet voice over IP is coming soon to the Treo 600, and should slash your international call costs.

I regular post here using my Treo, usually when waiting for my bus or train.

Only real problem is Flash sites, as I think Sony and Macromedia have made a pact to NOT release it for Palm-based PDAs that are not Sony.

Anyway, I dislike Flash as it's not Google-able!

Now got a few 512MB sd cards as they were going cheap.

Less than £90 each on Ebay!

I now have a credible iPod alternative, and there's some free text to speech software now available for the Treo!

Voice recording and mp3 ringtones and video ringtones are now available!

The Treo won the CNet smartphone contest, and has been called the TiVo of phones
