Angel season one

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I didn't see this mentioned when I did a search so here goes: Angel season one is currently being shown, on (if memory serves) FX.

I've seen two episodes so far, not sure if I missed earlier episodes. Since how Cordy, Angel, and Wesley happened to come together in LA is not explained, I assume that I missed the premier episode.

Anyway, I didn't start watching Angel til (I think) season three, so this is a good opportunity for me to catch up. I suddenly realized I should give others a heads up too, in case they were not aware of this.

I don't think old seasons of Angel have been reaired before, so I decided to post here.

It's on TNT, not FX. They're currently on the fourth week of weekday showings. I think they just showed number 18 of the 22 episodes of the first season. You can go to tvtome.com/Angel for some write-ups on the ones you missed.

Shows what a TiVoite I am, I had no idea what channel it was on.

Darn, looks like I've missed a lot of episodes. No matter, if TNT is like FX with Buffy, they'll loop back to the beginning of season one in a few months. I'll catch up with everything then.

Posted by: mitchb2

I've just started watching Buffy on DVD, having never seen it.
I've seen 4 episodes so far, and can't decide if it's good or if it's for teens. I'll give it another disk or two before I make judgement.

Is Angel a show that was meant to be watched concurrently with Buffy, or is it a standalone?

Pretty much standalone, especially once you get past season 1 of Angel.

I've got to say that I really don't like the way that TNT is doing commercial breaks. They're just sticking them whenever they want, and it breaks up the flow of the show. I realize why they're doing it (to stretch the show all the way to minute 59), but I still don't care for it.

Oh, well, I'm just glad it's on. I'm looking forward to rewatching season 2 and the first part of season 3. I didn't much care for the 2nd part of season 3 due to..

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

the whole baby thing.

If wesley is on the episode you watched then you missed a chunk of the first season. If I remember right he came into the picture somewhere around midseason

There are a few crossovers between Angel and Buffy. Season 1 of Angel coincides with Season 4 of Buffy. Not many crossovers but a few. I have Season 1 and 2 of Angel on DVD, so am waiting for S3 to start on TNT. Should be in about 5 weeks.

Cordy and Angel are introduced in the first episode. The rest happens later in.

Yes, I was going to comment on that too.

It's jarring, because the show will come to a natural break, and I will start skipping ahead, only to realize that the commercials haven't started, and the show is still playing. And then, they'll break to commercials in the middle of a crucial scene, and come back from commercials into the middle of that scene, completely breaking the feeling of story continuity.

Very shoddy.

Yes, the first episode I watched already had Wesley. The other day they introduced Faith. So I appear to have missed a goodly portion of the first season. I'll catch them later on TNT, hopefully.

Hopefully. I missed about two weeks worth.

"I've seen 4 episodes so far, and can't decide if it's good or if it's for teens"

Buffy is by far the superior show, particularly once you get into the 2nd season. Just like Angel, it took a season or two to get its bearings. For those of you watching Angel, give it a chance. The first season or two, with that guy from Roseanne, aren't all that great, aside from the Buffy crossovers, but it starts to get good when Gunn and Fred enter the picture in season two. BTW, is anyone else loving not having Cordy around this season, or is it just me?

To say Buffy is the superior show is... I think... a little bit disingenuous.

They're both good, in very different ways. Buffy was always the light, quippy, offbeat show. When Angel started, they deliberately made it a darker, more "adult" show if you will. First of all, they're obviously forced into doing a lot of night scenes, due to the main character being a vampire; this contrasts with a lot of light daytime scenes in Sunnydale. Whether that's better or worse is questionable.

The "guy from Roseanne," Doyle (played by Glenn Quinn), was a great character. They had originally wanted the character of Whistler (appeared as a guest star on Buffy during the Angelus arc), but couldn't get the actor. In my opinion, Glenn Quinn was excellent on the series. May he rest in peace. :-(

By the way:
- Glenn Quinn (Doyle) was only in season 1
- J. August Richards (Gunn) appeared in season 1 in a couple of episodes, but became a regular in season 2
- As far as I'm aware, Amy Acker (Fred) didn't appear until Season 3 - I haven't seen much of season 2 and 3 yet

Charisma Carpenter was on "Miss Match" as a guest a few weeks ago and played, essentially......Cordy from season one of Buffy all grown up.

And that is the only reason I have watched an episode of Miss Match. Unless she comes back, I have no reason to ever watch it again.

Doyle was actually only in the first 8 or 9 episodes of the show, not the whole first season.

Gunn was introduced in an episode late in the first season, and became a regular during season 2.

Fred was introduced during the "Pylea" arc that closed out the second season, ands became a regular during season 3.

Lori: I didn't want to give away that much information about Doyle, in case there were people that wanted to watch the season 1 episodes without getting spoiled. :)

Me neither. My girlfriend was watching "Miss Match," I saw Charisma and watched it with her. I will not watch it again, but I scored points for willingness to "try out a new show" with her. ;)

They've been showing some episodes out of order.

For instance, the other day they had the episode where Fred meets her parents (season three?).

And before that they had the first episode where Gunn appears, in season one.

And also a very early episode aired the other day, where Cordy gets her new apartment with the ghost, which was also the first episode that I have seen with Doyle.

I'm not sure what kind of logic is going into the order that they are airing these episodes in.

Episodes from season three are being broadcast at 11:00 (Eastern). Once a week, I think. The five day a week shows at 5:00 are shown in order of the original air date. I'm not sure about the ep with Doyle. Maybe they show some assorted reruns from earlier in the season during the weekends. I'm not sure about that because my SP doesn't pick those up, probably because of the 28 day rule. Do you have your SP or WL set to "repeats and first-runs" or "all occurances"?

TNT is showing the episodes in order -- the ones at 5 PM (Eastern) Monday-Friday are from Season 1 and they are in order.

They are also showing Season 4 reruns on Tuesday nights.

One of your local stations may be showing other episodes in syndication on a weekly basis. Here in the SF Bay Area, WB20 is showing Season 1 reruns on Saturdays (one per week so they are already way behind the TNT Season 1 episodes) and Season 3 reruns on Sundays.

It sounds like you may have picked up the syndicated reruns on your local station. They would have probably shown "Rm w/a Vu" (where Cordelia gets the haunted apartment, with Doyle) recently, as well as the one where you meet Fred's parents which was early in Season 3.

I do not have a Wish List for Angel. I have "repeats and first runs" Season Passes on both the local WB station and TNT for Angel.

I checked my recording history, and the "out of order" episodes were recorded from my local Fox station, which I was not even aware was showing Angel reruns, and I am positive these were not recorded as Suggestions. They appeared at the top of my Now Playing list along with other Season Pass shows I watch regularly.

Now that I think about it, the recording history doesn't make note of Suggestions, does it? If that is so, than these had to be recorded as either SPs or WLs, and I had neither a WL for Angel, nor an SP for the channel it was recorded on.

Is my TiVo acting up? Very weird. I've added an Angel SP for my local Fox channel, so I will at least still have the illusion that my TiVo is obeying my commands. Maybe my TiVo has developed AI and started recording Angel on other channels where I didn't know Angel was being aired.

Posted by: TeeSee

Your Tivo isn't acting up. I'm sure you're just missing something.

Do you have a SP for the new season 5 episodes on the WB? Maybe that's the channel that also shows season 3 reruns. If not then that is weird. Maybe those extra recordings are Tivo Suggestions. I have suggestions turned off so I wouldn't know if they'd show up in the recording history. What does your upcoming suggestions list say? I just checked mine and there's no Angel listed. There's a ton of stuff I would never be interested in but no Angel, which it knows I am interested in. Again, weird.

Maybe, but I can't think of anything.

No. The out of order season one, and the season three, episodes were recorded on my local Fox affiliate. I went back on my Recording History and checked; they were recorded on my Fox affiliate, not my WB affiliate. I was not aware my Fox affiliate was broadcasting Angel reruns, and thus did not have a SP set up on that channel.

I thought of that, but I would have noticed if they had appeared as Suggestions, as I have a long list of recorded, unwatched SPs which make it impossible for me to see new Suggestions unless I scroll down to look at them. And I distinctly remember them being at the top of my Now Playing list, where I expected my WB and TNT SPs of Angel to be.

I always have Suggestions turned on, and I never see a Suggestions listed in Recording History. I did see these Fox broadcasted Angel reruns listed there, hence my assumption they are not Suggestions.

I'm not able at the moment to look, but I doubt I have any Angel suggestions as I have over-thumbed too many other shows.

Posted by: dmdeane

I should note that since I have already added a SP for Angel on my Fox affiliate, I couldn't have any more Suggestions for Angel unless there is a fourth channel that starts showing Angel.

Well, I'm stumped. The reason why I think you might be missing something is because this doesn't sound like a software or hardware error to me, but I'm hardly an expert. At least you're getting the shows you want. That's better than not getting some shows you wanted. LOL Have you tried asking on the Tivo Help forum? I'm sure they can be of more help than I can. Good luck.

Nah. It's not like this is a real "problem" for me, just a poser.

Besides, I fully expect people to say or imply that I'm missing something or misremembering. There's no way to argue against that; I know what I know, and there's no way I can convince anyone otherwise. So it's rather pointless to try.
