Friends 10-23

So watching last night's Friends, I had a question. At one point, Rachel gets pulled over and doesn't have a license, so she calls Ross and he goes out and takes it to her. Then they show her driving him back to their apartment... so how did he get out there? I assumed he drove (supposed he COULD have taken the subway)...

Also, found a cool editing goof.. when they all get back to the apartment, watch Joey carefully. They cut to Monica and Phoebe talking, and you can see Joey sit down behind them.. then they cut to Rachel, and Joey is magically standing next to her, then he sits down....

Posted by: dthmj

I'm thinking he had to take the subway - Rachel had borrowed Monica's car - if Ross had had a car available, why didn't she just take his, or he take the cake back?

Yeah, that made no sense. Maybe he took a cab? If he brought her license to her, why was he driving them back together? IN A PORSCHE?

Either Ross owns the Porsche, and they left Monica's car on the side of the road; or it's Monica's Porsche (Rachel borrowed her car) which makes one wonder why they have one when most of last season she & Chandler were worried about money, because he was unemployed. If I'm unemployed and living in Manhattan, I think the Porsche is the first thing I'd sell :)

Quick question: Where's Charlie?

The Porshe is Monica's. Her dad gave it to her when he accidentally ruined all of her stuff. IIRC he had used the boxes of her stuff to save the porsche when the garage flooded. I could see her not selling it for sentimental reasons. As a side point there is no subway that could have gotten Ross to NJ, they only run within NY. It must have been a cab or a bus. They were not driving on a NY highway, it was definately in NJ.

Couldn't it have been a train? I've taken the train from NY to NJ before.

Sure but the chances that she got pulled over at a train station are slim, of course that bodes poorly for Bus too but at least with a bus he could have found one that took the same route as her.

good point.

Posted by: scottjf8

He's a doctor.. you have to figure he can afford his own car...

Thanks Craig,

I must have missed that episode. I still think if you are having trouble paying the bills and you live in Manhattan you sell the Porsche! Geez, the parking bill and insurance alone would buy tons of cleaning supplies and closet organizers! It seems out of character that Chandler would let that one go when they are having conversations about cutting back.

But, this is Friends, after all.

Yeah, but could he afford to leave it on the side of the highway in NJ? I assumed he'd drive Rachels license to her, but since they came back in Monica's car together I figure he took a cab.

That turned out to be one expensive penis-cake.

Ph.D., which probably means he doesn't have an overly-large income. ;)

PhD? Pretty Huge ....

(that one was on in syndication yesterday)

I have a NY question, although this show brought it out. I beleive I have seen all six of the friends now drive (maybe not Chandler), but do most New Yorkers have licenses and not drive? If I never had a car and had no reason to drive would you keep renewing your DL?

Posted by: geektron

This season sucks! Like someone just said, where was Charlie? I was wondeing if this was a repeat or something. There was all that stuff going on the last episode with Joey/Rachel and Ross/Charlie and this episode just pretends none of it happened?!

Posted by: kdaveler

I don't think this has been brought up. Why would Rachael have had to harm Monica to get her car if Ross had a car.

Ross had to have taken a cab. It also makes me wonder why he didn't ask someone else there to give him a ride out there. I assume by this that none of the others have a car.

Also, Did any one else see Elliot on Scrubbs. The dream sequence in the row boat. Yowza. Had to replay that a couple of times.

I have lived in the NY/NJ area for all of my life. It is true that most people, even in the city have valid driver's licenses. There are lots of things you need them for, like getting on an airplane, or even renting a video. Also in NY I think that you can renew them by mail so it is not that hard to do. There are certainly people who do not have driver's licenses but I would suspect that they are the exception.

What color was the car last night? It looked silver to me and I could have sworn the car Monica's dad gave her was red.

Sure it's tv,but I just like catching Friends many continuity problems. Sometimes it seems that they don't think any of us remember previous seasons.

Posted by: Big_Daddy

I didn't expect to see these conversations occurring in a Friends thread! This discussion over continuity issues and plot holes is usually what i see over in the Star Trek: Enterprise threads!

Where's a copy of William Shatner's SNL skit when you really need it? :p

The car was Silver/Gray but so was the one her dad gave her. I do agree though, continuity issue in Sitcoms and especially in Friends is a major pet peeve of mine, but this time they got it right.

Well, to get away from the current topic I will say I really enjoyed last nights episodes. All 6 friends in one lacation like old times.

It was very funny.

Posted by: scottjf8

always fun reading at http://www.moviemistakes.com/tv2651

Posted by: geektron

Continuity doesn't really work very well when they often swap one actor for the next to play the same role. Anyone remember Jerry Seinfeld's original dad? What about the original Carol on Friends?

That was the same color car as the original though. It sounds like a lot of you haven't watched too many episodes. ;) Monica is the only one with a car. The only other car that any of them have owned (off of the top of my head) was when Ross bought the MG "sports car" and it got stuck while parked and he couldn't move it. He sold it after seeing an old bald guy driving the same car.

Indeed I did. Wow! She's really decided to sell her body.

And of course there was Joey's fake Porsche... That was a good episode!!

And Phoebe's grandma's taxi...

Didn't Ross have a car in that episode? A Jeep Cherokee or something?

In that episode it was his ex-wifes (1st ex) that he borrowed to help Phoebe after she ran the taxi out of gas.

You beat me to the punch! As mentioned above, in "The One Without the Ski Trip" (I think), Ross borrows Carol's car...

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. This could possibly be the worst Friends episode ever.

They should have shown the penis cake.

And I'm sorry, but *you're* wrong! This was a good episode; not great, but there have been many worse ones, including several mentioned in this thread. But tomato, tomahto...

Ah, I just love it when others tell me my opinion on something entirely subjective is wrong.

You're wrong! You don't love it when people do that!

:)

Posted by: bigpuma

I must be wrong too because I laughed quite a bit at this episode and I think it was the funniest so far in this early part of the season.

Posted by: JYoung

really?
I thought that they were self absorbed jerks for wanting to bail on Emma's birthday but that's just me.

I guess there are two possibilities.
1) you are one of those annoying people who like Rachael think their 1 year olds birthday is of earth shattering importance.
2) You dont have friends who have made you come to their ridiculously large/lavish 1 year old birthday party.

I for one found it hilarious because I've been at a party just like that (no penis cake though).

This was probably the worst episode of the season so far, IMO.

What I would like to know is WHY the writers felt the need to throw in several gratuitous male body part comments throughout the episode?? This has been a disturbing trend in Friends for the past couple of years. The writers have written plenty of great episodes in the past without this nonsense...

I watched the ending again and saw that editing goof. You clearly see him sit down and then you seem him standing and sitting again. They must have noticed, but maybe didn't want to re-shoot or re-edit again.

As far as Ross and Rachel in the car I was thinking the same thing. How did Ross get to her? I thought he was going to drive, but then you see both of them together on the ride back. You can't really put much thought into a 30 minute sitcom I guess.

Posted by: geektron

I almost forgot about Joey's fake Porsche. That was a good one. :) The Taxi is/was Phoebe's g-ma's, so I didn't count that.

and then there are the people who make comments on people they know nothing about.

(I can't believe I'm defending Rachel as I haven't liked the character for the past couple of years)

Rachel wanted a relatively simple party for Emma, just the Gellars and her closest friends. Sure, at that age, it was more for Ross and Rachel's benefit then Emma's but it's still a celebration and I thought it was selfish of Monica and Chandler to plan a weekend away on the birthday of their niece.
For some reason, I thought the show was about friendship.....

Posted by: scott408

And darn it... it's a party for a kid. So where was ben huh?

Posted by: ClutchBrake

I figured Ross took a cab. What I thought was absurd was not how Ross got there, but the thought that a cop would make someone bring her license in order to let her drive home.

I don't really see that happening either. The few times that I have been pulled over I either gave the cop my DL number and he called it in and gave me a warning or he gave me ticket that was dismissed when I showed the judge my DL.

I don't know why I nit pick these shows. I guess I have way too much time on my hands.

I can relate to them. I have neices and nephews. At one year old, they have no idea of things like birthdays or Christmas. They act pretty much the same on those days as any other day. When they're 4 or 5, then the parties are fun. Otherwise, they're more for the parents than anyone. Besides, didn't everyone want to leave because the kid was asleep for hours and Monica and Chandler didn't want to wake her. Wake the kid up! She can sleep later. If I found myself going to a 1-year-old's party and the parents let the kid sleep for hours, I'd be out of there so quick!

Posted by: MikeekiM

I had a hard time getting past the selfishness of Rachel and Ross...

Forcing their friends to participate in their child's first birthday party? Come on... How many of us would do this? How many of us know people that would do this?

Seems unrealistic to me... If anything, I find that parents don't want to inconvenience others, and are more understanding AFTER they become parents...

Now, the reaction of the others seemed reasonable (a little over the top, but more based in reality)...

Except that Chandler and Monica were planning to be gone before the party......

Hmm child's first birthday and no grandparents!!!!!!!

That would have been important, dontcha think? And yup.. Ben.. half-brother... nope.. don't invite him.

I'm sorry but the episode was so un-funny it was sad. It was like they forgot to put the jokes in.

The end of last season was getting very good.. seemed like the writers were trying hard. This season it's bad! Enough about Ross & Rachel for one thing... PLAYED OUT.

They all deserve to be in a home because none seem to be able to function very well in the world. :)

I wouldn't mind the plot holes if it was actually funny.

And how many homophobic jokes can they have? Jeez... it's OLD.

I found it very annoying that they were all yelling and screaming and the kid was in the next room supposedly sound asleep???? Uh huh...

LOL, my wife's family is just like that. Our first daughter turned one. My word at the things that were going on. I was like, what's the big deal? Oh, but no, it was a big deal and what was I doing for not making a big deal out of it. Heck, I'm the father, don't I have a say? So, I just humored her and went along unless I want the my inlaws (the women actually, the guys didn't care) hate me. lol. Now, my youngest daughter is turning one here in a couple of months and there's already talk of preperations to be made. YAY!
