Help with Sony SVR-3000

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My Sony SVR-3000 has crapped out. Every night, after the daily call, it will make a loud clicking noise. The only way to get it back to normal is to unplug it. then it takes forever to reboot, but I can use it (until the next call).

I've tried following the instructions on the how-to upgrade the Tivo (bought a new 120gb drive today). However, I cannot backup the original drive because it keeps failing.

Has anyone had this happen to them? How can I get around it? Someone suggested getting a virgin image, but I can't find one. I don't want to pay Sony a penny more for their crap machine.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.

It does sound like a failing drive.

You can try using dd with conv=noerror, sync to see if it can get past the bad block. And/or you can run PowerMax on it to see if it can repair the bad blocks long enough for MFS Tools or dd to complete.

Strictly speaking the fault lies with Maxtor and not Sony.

I ran Powermax, and the program showed that the drive was totally error free, even after running the extensive (read - Slooow) test. Does that mean that the drive upgrade isn't the answer? MFS Tool still won't yield a good backup to me.

I am lost, and would like to know what to do, if anyone can help.

Also, using DD, can I just make a perfect copy of the original and move directly to using the newer 120gb drive?

Thanks,

Rob

Hinsdale describes how to use dd to clone a drive. Using conv=noerror, sync is probably a good idea, whatever PowerMax says.

Rob,

Diagnostics say the drive is fine, but you say you cannot get a backup. What is the error message you get when trying to make a backup ?

I'm sure one of us SVR-3000 owners can find you an appropriate backup, though I cannot attest to its moral status. For all I know its been installed far and wide, wandering electronically over hillock, hammock, and buttock.

When I try to run the backup using this command

mfsbackup -f 9999 -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc

it shows that it needs to backup 848KB. It gets to around 200K and stops, saying that if failed.

However, the last message on that screen will say that the Backup: success. Trying to use the file does not work.

We also tried unlocking the drive, but that didn't help.

The How-To says that this process should take at least 5 minutes. It stops within a minute at most, so I know it couldn't have made a full backup of everything.

I may try to clone the drive, as has been suggested.

Rob
