Farscape DVDs

Can anyone with the Farscape DVDs give me an idea about how worth it they are? $150/season retail -- $600 retail total, kindof on the pricey side. If I buy them, I want to know that they're really good quality. Looks like they're full frame -- no 5.1?
I have season 1 on Tivo from the run and I've only watched the first two eps. Not sure if Sci-Fi plans to reair the rest anytime soon or not.

They are good quality with some extras. If you are a fan of the show, buy them. Let your voice be heard that Farscape is good TV and should have not been cancelled.

We can make our voices heard, but that won't bring it back ... :(

You never know. In any case, it doesn't hurt. I'd rather watch the DVDs than watch Farscape repeats on that frelling pitiful excuse for a science fiction TV channel. :)

You can get them for around $90 each...try www.dvdpricesearch.com
Still steep, but..!

I'm not really into the politics of buying something to make a statement -- I was just looking for info about how good the quality of the discs are (comparing the experience to waiting for syndication on DirecTv vs. the DVDs).

The quality is great and there are some good commentaries on some of them (I just wish there were more).
Also, the first season in the US had some missing scenes (which were shown elsewhere) which have been restored in the DVD versions.

The quality is great!
...but the price sucks!!!!
edit:
incorrect pricing info removed. thanks rob

The retail on Farscape 1 & 2 is the same ($150); you must have gotten a REALLY good deal. Same with Babylon 5 ($99 each); the set you're talking about is both Season 1 & 2 combined.
[Edit] This was in response to a post that has since been deleted, in which somebody reported getting Farscape 1 for $70 at Best Buy, and seeing Babylon 5 2 selling for $150.

I've been getting the two-disk packs for seasons 2 and 3 and expect to do the same for season 4. I got the box set for season 1.
Nice to see 3.5 kept the episodes in order, splitting the two-parter between disks, unlike 2.5. But please, it was a "rogue leviathan", not a "rouge leviathan".

Farscape was a great show, but the DVDs are overpriced. They are good quality (includes commentaries and DD 5.1), but they are much harder to find at a decent price than other TV shows.

I've found this to be the case with ALL tv shows released on DVD by ADV Films. They mostly release anime titles wjere they can apparently get away with overcharging for DVD releases.

Smaller potential audience results in a higher price point. Gotta recoup the licensing costs somewhere...

Shouldn't a small audience simply mean a smaller licensing fee? I would imagine the actual cost associated with licensing is minimal, and the license fee is largely marginal income, leaving the licensor free to charge what the market will bear (which suggests the real reason for the high price is the devotion of farscape fans ;)).

I don't think it's the licensing fee -- it's the minimum total profit that ADV intends to make from the investment. They figure, "There are x number of people who will buy this at $120 and y number that will buy at $150. If y isn't a significantly lower number than x, we'll charge the $150." It's not about the cost of manufacturing, and it rarely ever is. It's about charging the price the market is willing to pay.
Now, in my view, ADV has still made a mistake because they've priced themselves out of crossover fans. There are hardcore Farscape fans who want these and geeky sci-fi people (like me) who are interested, but it's hard to grow beyond your base market with an unreasonable price. But that only tends to make me think they'll reduce the price later after they've soaked all the hardcore fans willing to pay the current price.
I found them for $90/season, by the way, but that's still $360 for four seasons. That's probably the lowest retail margin I'll be able to find.

I think ADV makes the bulk of profit on anime discs (the bulk of my collection comes from them) but I'm pretty sure that Henson and the rest of the companies involved with Farscape didn't let it go for cheap. I've found that most niche products tend to be more expensive than mass market products (blockbuster movie DVDs tend to be cheaper than things like B5 or anime discs).

I have the first season box set which is 4:3. I know Farscape switched to letterbox at some point, are later DVDs in the 16:9 widescreen format?
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
Season 2 is 4:3; Season 4 is 16:9; I'm not sure about 3...

Season 3 is 4:3. Only season 4 is widescreen.

Simple economics. The broader the userbase, the more a lower price point makes sense. If the product can be converted to an impluse buy, that's the sweet spot. Anime and Farscape will never be impulse buy for the majority of people.
I walked into Walmart yesterday and only had to walk about three feet from the cash register to purchase Hulk Widescreen for $15.87 (the best price I could find). I then turned around and checked out without buying anything else, shopping or having to look for anything. It's great when my desires coincide with the masses--however rare that may be.

I want to know what's on the 11th disk in the Season 2 box set. I got the point releases and they only total 10 disks.

BestBuy.com page says "11pc". I'm hoping the link works. Their site annoyingly requires cookies.
