DirecTiVo Hughes GXCEBOT upgrade gone awry

I followed Hinsdale's instructions for upgrading my Tivo (Hughes GXCEBOT DirecTivo w/40Gb original "A" drive -- replacing with 120Gb Seagate 7200 to become the new "A" drive) and ran into some problems. Hoping others can offer some insight. Here's what happened:
I booted PC using the CD I made from the downloaded MFS Tools package and made the backup image of my original TiVo drive. I then put the new 120 Gb drive in the PC and restored to the 120Gb. When I put that drive in the Tivo to test the restore, the system hung up on the "Welcome. Powering up..." message screen. I powered down and checked jumpers, cables, etc. to no avail. I tried restoring again with no luck. Until I could figure out what went wrong, I put the old drive back in...but it is now doing the same thing...getting hung up on the welcome screen.
The system had been working fine prior to pulling the drive from the system. All steps of the backup/restore process seemed okay (no errors...everything went just as described in the how to.) Once the backup had been made from the original drive, That drive never went back in the PC. I also tried the "non-Quantum" routine just to be sure. I've also tried alternate jumper settings to be sure. I was up to software version 3.0.1-01-1-031. I was hoping to do the "dd copy" routine to preserve the programs from the old drive, but when these problems cropped up I stopped before doing anything possibly more destructive.
I can buy a new Hughes/Phillips system for $99 at Best Buy (albeit with only a 40Gb drive :-( ) so I'm not terribly concerned about the box if it has fried. Hard drives are cheap too and I'd be happy to be able to restore to the new drive and lose the old programs (if necessary.) however, I'd like to retrieve the programs from this original drive if possible. So my questions are, has something in the system fried? Can a properly formatted drive be installed and get this system up and running again? Is there any way to retrieve the programs on the original A drive?
Thanks,
bingoman
