HDVR2 HDD upgrade question...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm on my 4th read of the Hinsdale How-To.

Is there a way to simply add a 120GB HDD to my HDVR2 without running Hinsdale on the factory 40GB HDD?

I understand Weaknees sells a HDD that you drop in without removing the factory drive. How does this work if, according to Hinsdale, "After creating and testing your Mfs Tools backup image, all that is remaining to do for this upgrade configuration is to run Mfsadd to make your existing A drive aware of the added space provided by your new large upgrade B drive."

I just want to format my 120GB (with Hinsdale or whatever) then drop it in to my HDVR2 with the TwinBreezeȘ brackets I bought. Is this a possibility?

(I only own Macs and would have to take drives back a forth from my house where the Tivo lives to my friends house with the PC leaves. My Tivo would be down for that time.)

Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes and no.

You need a program called BlessTiVo to do what you want to do. There is a program called MacTiVoBlesser (found here), but it actually doesn't work with the HDVR2 or any other Series 2 TiVo.

What about on a PC. How can I bless a second drive and add it to the (unmodified) factory drive in the HDVR2? (Without ever having to place the original drive in a PC.)

Thanks

You would need to follow the instructions for blessing your second drive. You can use the Hinsdale instructions...different from the ones that discuss MFSAdd.

Ok, this is where I'm confused...

In section 10 of the Hinsdale How-To (version 2.0) it says, "After creating and testing your Mfs Tools backup image, all that is remaining to do for this upgrade configuration is to run Mfsadd to make your existing A drive aware of the added space provided by your new large upgrade B drive."

Where in the Hinsdale does it describe how to simply bless the second drive? Should I use the first version of the Hinsdale How-To for this?

Obviously this is possible as Weaknees, ptvupgrade, and Hinsdale all sell 2nd hard drives that can drop in to Tivos without altering the factory drive, right?

Thanks

Weaknees has a ISO to do just that ( add another disk) and tells you just what to type >>diy-upgrade.php<< but I think it is for pc

sorry for got go to weaknees >com and add that to it

Someone did try MacTiVoBlesser on a Series 2 a while back. It was rather odd, the B drive did get added, but with exactly zero space on it. Most unfortunate.

BleesTiVo works OK, though.

bt556 thanks for the link to the weaknees page. Took the TiVo drive out put it in a friend's PC along with the second drive. Took about 20 minutes, if that. I installed the TwinBreeze and second drive, now showing up to 141 hours in system info.

All very smooth. Only one issue. I installed a Seagate 120GB ATA V drive, which I had previously installed in an UltimateTV. The drive is clicking very loudly. I know it wasn't nearly as loud in the UltimateTV. Does any one have any idea why this would be? It's much louder than the fans. When the Hughes DirecTiVo is in standby (still plugged in) the drive is silent.
