What about a Memory Stick Equipped Tivo?

How about a Sony Tivo equipped with a Memory Stick Slot and a 1Gb Memory Stick. If your wife/child/roomate just has to watch a show in the bedroom (where one of your Tivos has recorded the show you want to watch), just download the show onto the Memory Stick. Take the Memory Stick into the living room, slip it into the other Tivo, upload...and happy watching!!! I hate being married to the room that has the Tivo that records the show I want.

1 GiB might be enough for a one hour recording at Basic Quality, but for higher qualities and movies, you'll be making multiple slippernet trips.

There is no spool.

A 1gb Sony Memory stick would be VERY expensive.
Right now they are only up to 128mb at about $1 per meg (since them as low as $95 on shopping.yahoo.com)
So a 1gb chip would be roughly $1048 if the price stayed the same (I am sure it would be much lower, but...)

So you are better off picking up one of the 900mhz video/remote transmitters for about $99 at Raido Shack (I am sure there are better prices and units else where).

They are fairly good over short distances. I use mine to go from the living room to the deck & loft/office. And get a very good reception, most of the time. No it is not perfect, but at least you are not stuck in your room with the TIVO.

Since you are going to be rebuilding the TiVo anyway to get a memory stick in there, how about just adding a slot for a user replaceable IDE device. No changes in the hardware, just a slightly different case and some programming chages to account for a drive being swapped out.

Ideally this could be a hard drive, ZIP, CDR, or DVDR.

The problem you would run into with any of this is it would open the door to file sharing. If data could be loaded on a memory stick, then one could also send that memory stick 'image' across the Internet. Same thing if Tivo could accept zip drives, or firewire drives or anything else.. It would be great, and really some file sharing should be ok. Like I missed part of South Park this week, I could have recorded it, so what's the problem if someone sends it to me? Problem comes in when you record a PPV and then want to send it out..

1) Why is ALL file sharing bad?
2) Why do you assume no copy protection would be used?

This thread has a protoype TiVo from a electronics show with a ZIP peerless removeable drive. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/Forum1/HTML/007942.html
