Explorer 2100 digi-cable box keeps shutting off!

I have my Tivo hooked up to a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100 and have been having this issue for a while. Sometimes, I'll come home, and the box is off. I know nobody turned it off inadvertantly, and it's been happening more frequently lately. Thinking it may be the power in the house having an occasional hiccup, I now have the Tivo & cable box running off of a UPS. Yet this continues to occur. There's no option in the cable box to have it automatically turn on when power is interrupted, if that's even what's causing it. I'm missing so many shows because of this!!

Anyone have a problem like this? Thanks!

That seems to be a consistent problem with systems that use the S-A boxes. I've seen similar complaints from people who have Charter (which use S-A). I happen to have Comcast (which uses Motorola) so I can't give direct advice, but if the S-As have a timer feature like the MOTs have, then what you can do is set up timers for the box to come on and tune to a particular channel, this way it will go on in time for the TiVo to start recording.

With the MOT boxes I think it only turned itself off once and that was early in the morning due to some maintenance they were doing on the digital cable network.

I did. Turned out to be insufficient signal strength in the cable, so it was constantly trying to upgrade the firmware but failing. Requires a visit from your installer.

Or you have IR sender pyramids operating on the same frequency as a neighbor.

I still have a Wishlist for an episode of Dark Angel I missed because of this. (I'm not buying the DVD box set; hopefully it can be rented.)

So, I guess it is an S-A thing. I know Staten Island has Time Warner, so it isn't a "Charter thing." I really haven't heard of it occuring in other S-A areas like Cablevision or the 1% of Comcast that uses those boxes. From what I've seen, the SARA interface is really cool, much better than the clunky Gemstar TV guide interface. Of course nothing beats a TiVo when it comes to a user interface. ;)

I have multiple Scientific Atlanta boxes and had one cable box that would frequently turn off. Cable signal strength was probably a contributing factor because I learned I did have a problem with that. However, because this one box did it so, so much more than the others, I simply exchanged it for another (at no charge from the Charter).

Hrm... Not sure what to do about this. I actually had to specifically request this box, because when I upgraded to digital cable, they gave me some cheapo "pace" boxes which is what they're currently deploying. My Tivo never even heard of a "pace" box, and neither did Tivo's customer support. So I had to return it and request the SA box. I wonder if the pace box has this problem.

Many UK TiVos work with Pace boxes. Here in the U.S., we've had a few recent posters using the Pace DC-510.

I went through (at least) three exchanges of a SA 3000HD cable box until they upped my signal strength. It would always turn off some time on Fridays after noon.
