Supersized Friends, Will & Grace, and Scrubs - NOT spoilers

Anyone else annoyed with NBC and how they handle their supersized episodes? I can't even imagine what it must have been like to watch Friends live tonight. I TiVo'd it, and even then got bored fast-forwarding through the first commercial block! It was over four minutes from the start of the opening credits until they returned from commercial break. Does anyone feel like they got more "show", or like they were just shown more commercials?
Next up to annoy me tonight was the closing act of Friends, during the closing credits, which got cut off because TiVo ended the recording. (I know: not TiVo's fault, but Tribune's or NBC's. Not the point here.) The same happened with W&G's closing act: cut off. Because I TiVo'd all three shows, I was able to pick up the tail end of Friends on W&G, and the end of W&G on Scrubs, but having those breaks seriously reminded me of the olden days, listening to music on an 8-track player!

The commercials before the end credits was yet another block of commercials that lasted about 5 minutes.

Would be great to eitehr get the guide data to reflect the actual show times or have NBC cut it the f out. I record F, W&G, Scrubs, ER but I am not a fan of show splicing to catch beginning/ends and don't want a 3 hour block recording. :(

I don't like W&G so I don't TiVo it, but I pad Friends so I get the closing. Anyone else miss the opening moments of Scrubs?
Posted by: LlamaLarry
Yeah, I did. I had W&G, but fell asleep watching it (great review of the show I guess), deleted it when I woke up and ate the beginning of Scrubs. :::sigh:::

Yep...I did...pissed me off too. I think NBC should just cut this crap out. It's bad enough they're trying to cheat to win the ratings game, it's worse when they screw over their paying customers. That's right we don't pay for TV, so they can continue to do this as long as they like.

Why not? Block manual recording seems to be about the only way to TiVo stuff anymore to avoid having to put up with the splicing. I've given up on relying on shows starting and stopping on time and simply do a manual record each evening from five minutes before prime time starts to 40 minutes after it ends. If there's a show on I have no interest in watching it's no big deal to advance through it. Of course it helps to have 3 machines, one for each major network. If there's something I want to see on the WB or Fox or some other cable channel there's always the VCR.

Yeah, I have done it before and it ges what I ask for accomplished, but it just bugs me.
Okay, you called me on it, I know a solution to my problem but want NBC to just stop messing with my head. :) I only have this problem on Thursday as 3 of my 4 tuners have something to record from 8 to 11pm.

Only one way this issue goes away. STOP WATCHING!! Ratings go down, NBC will stop it. As far as I can tell, they are the only network doing this to this extent.

Yes, I never used to mind missing the end of Friends because it gets picked up by my wife's Season Pass to Will and Grace. But she recently deleted that SP, and so I MISSED the end of Friends! I join your ranks of the perturbed. And yes, I missed the beginning of Scrubs, too. I've just gone in and padded my SP to friends to catch more of the end, but that doesn't solve my Scrubs problem.

I checked the Guide last night to see if Friends/W&G would be "found" as supersize. The guide said Friends will go to 8:40 & W&G would start 8:43 and continue to 9:23. I looked at the tivo at about 9:00 and it wasn't recording W&G!! So I missed the first 17 minutes. I haven't watched Friends yet, so I don't know where that taped until.
I thought the SP went according to the Guide? Am I wrong? (I know wrong forum, but can anyone help anyway??)

I think what you did is the only way around it... making sure that Tivo is set up to record all three shows, and maybe adding some padding on the last one.
How much extra padding can you add onto the end of a show? Maybe it would be worthwhile to just have Tivo set to record Friends, but add enough padding to cover both W&G and Scrubs.
As long as NBC doesn't release the true lengths to the schedule guides, this'll be a problem.

If you are a Nielsen or Arbitron household you can have some effect on ratings, otherwise what you watch or don't watch has no effect at all.

Well yes and no, and that is one of the problems with the ratings system, is a relatively small percentage of watchers determine what we all watch.
How about we boycott the sponsors of these shows, loudly and publically, that would put a stop to it as well.

NBC needs to do two things.
1. Stop screwing with the schedule. You won't win any viewers over by making them miss parts of their favorite shows.
2. Come up with a decent show to stick in from 8:30 to 9pm. This is why number 1 keeps happening. If NBC had something good to stick in the half hour slot they wouldn't mess around with everything because they would have a complete lineup again. But they haven't had a show worth watching in that spot for years.

Is Ted Danson's show ("Becker", I think) still on the air?
Maybe they could do a "Cheers" series again... I don't think that many of those cast members are doing much, other than Frasier and possibly Ted Danson.

What do you mean?!? Scrubs is the best sitcom NBC has on Thursday night.

This is NBC's way of battling CBS and Survivor. I don't watch reality shows, but what I gather is a lot of folks would switch over after Friends and catch the last 1/2 hr, thus catching the best part of the show. Friends isn't any longer, just more commercials to make it appear longer. We have been padding that show ever since we got TiVo, and I find I have to pad a lot of shows just catch the ends. Kind of a cowardly way of trying to battle CBS, in my opinion that is. If you really wanted to win a clean fight put up some great programming head to head. They are POing a lot of people, and I would like to see it backfire, but then again, there aren't many episodes of Friends left that they can mess with. This is a shortened season because J. Aniston can't wait to get it over with.

Sorry should have said 9:30-10. I love Scrubs don't know what I was thinking when I typed that. Still doesn't change the fact that NBC needs a complete Thursday lineup so they don't play this stupid Supersized game when things aren't going well for them.

I remember when I used to look forward to sweeps because it meant a month of new episodes of everything. Now, for NBC, it just means a month of more Law & Order reruns.

Look out for L&O: Tactical Sweep Team

I could easily see NBC replacing everything failing show on the network with a L&O spinoff, since they now own Universal that produces all the current versions they show.
