Closed captioning surprise

When I was watching the movie "Mojave Moon" on the "WE" channel, I noticed that everytime they cursed obscenities, it was censored by muting the sound during the obscene word. But if you turn on closed captioning, no censoring at all! The "F*" word, and "S*" word were there in all their glory. And this was on the "WE" channel, no less!

I've seen this before on stand up specials on comedy central. Many of them were originally aired on HBO or Showtime, complete with language. When it goes to comedy central, they bleep the audio, but the captioning is still intact.

Yeah this happens all the time. My favorite is when there are captions for dialogue that clearly are not audible on screen, as in I don't think that normal hearing people were intended to hear anything".
Recent example of this was during this week's ST: Enterprise as they look at people through binoculars and you read captions for what they are saying but there is no audio.

My favorites are when the script has obviously been changed but the captioning didn't get the update. The actors say one thing but the captioning says something completely different. Or there is the occasional inside joke in the captioning. There was an episode of Scrubs last season where the following "joke" was found in the closed captioning:
Actual line delivered on the audio: (JD voice over)"By showing up Dr. Cox I told the world I was no longer a child. I was 'The Man.'"
Closed Captioning: "By showing up Dr. Cox I told the world I was no
longer a child. I was as fly as Jeff Zucker."
(Just in case you don't know, Jeff Zucker is the president of NBC's Entertainment Division.)
