TurboNET installation on a DirecTiVo - problem

Hello,

I'm new to TiVo hacking. Unfortunately, I'm also new to Linux. I installed my TurboNET card, followed the software installation instructions for DirecTiVo and using a bootable CD I made from "TurboNet/AirNet Install CD Image (version 20030223)".

It all seemed to go pretty smooth at first. I had link light activity on the TurboNET card and I entered an IP address (192.168.1.101), Subnet mask (255.255.255.0), and the default gateway (192.168.0.1) using the nic_install turbonet program.

pluged the patch cable into my hub and excitedly sat down at my Windows PC to ping my tivo.... Then I saw the troubling "Request Timed Out" and I new something wasn't right. I couldn't find any sign of the TiVo on my home network.

I decided to try pulling out the A drive and running nic_install again... This time I choose DHCP. Still no luck. I used a serial connection to get a
[tivo:root]-# prompt via Hyperterminal but to be honest I don't know enough about linux to really do anything from the prompt.

Can anyone give me a couple pointers as to how I can troubleshoot this? Do I need to learn linux or are there a few lines of typing I could enter to diagnose this?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A little more information on how your network is set up would probably be more helpful. If you went through nic_install successfully, you should be able to at least ping. Do you have a router to an Internet connection or just a hub? More details would help.

Steve,

I do have a DSL router (NetGear RT314) which connects several Windows PCs in my house to the internet (and to eachother). Each PC is configured with an (fixed) IP address such as 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3, etc...

Every PC uses 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask and 192.168.0.1 as the gateway. 192.168.0.1 is my Netgear router's address.

I hope that info. is helpful. I'm happy to provide any other info you think might help!

Thanks again!

Todd.

In that case, I have to guess that in your original post, 192.168.1.101 was a typo. Did you mean 192.168.0.101? If it's not a typo, then you wouldn't connect because that's on a different network. Also, in your Netgear router, there should be an "Attached Devices" list. I have that on my Netgear wireless router. That would show if anything is connected. Also, if you have DHCP disabled on the router, you wouldn't see the Tivo either if it is set for DHCP.

Steve,

Thanks so much! Boy do I feel dumb! I ran nic_install again and choose 192.168.0.15 and then had not problem ping-ing my Tivo! Thanks for your help!

Todd.
