Karen Sisco - anyone?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just curious if anyone out there is watching this show - I am enjoying it. I really liked Out of Sight, and I think the main characters in this show stay pretty true to the movie (Robert Forrester nails Marshall Sisco, IMHO)

They haven't played her father's name much. Before he retired he would have been Marshal Marshall. ;)

Is he ever gonna take that boat out?

Posted by: markz

I really enjoy this show too! And sometimes Sisco really looks hot!

Posted by: ClutchBrake

Love the show.

Posted by: DLiquid

I have a bunch of these on my TiVo, but the first episode didn't really grab me. I thought I heard this was canceled. True, or untrue?

Posted by: undeadsinatra

It hasn't been officially cancelled yet, but I think I read somewhere that ABC has been slow to order more shows.

I like Karen Sisco, too, and hope it survives. It must be getting murdered by L&O in the ratings, though.

One of my favorites, I watch each episode at least twice. Carla Gugino one of my favorites since she was on Spin City. Like the rest of the cast as well. Hope this show stays around a couple years at least. To many good shows aren't getting a fair chance to stay around.

Posted by: janry

Great show. I prefer the father's land yacht to the watercraft.

Posted by: Graymalkin

Wonderful show. (So of course ABC is hesitating about a full season.) Carla Gugino is better than Jennifer Lopez, as a looker AND an actress. Robert Forster is excellent. I didn't watch it last night, because I had to go to bed early, but I'm savoring the knowledge that it's waiting for me at home, on my TiVo.

Mmmm... Carla.

Posted by: Pass_Set_Kill

Another vote here for Karen Sisco being a great show! Typically, the networks will cancel a show with good complex characters.

Posted by: allan

I haven't tried it yet, but maybe it's a good thing. It looks like every new show I HAVE tried is getting axed!

Posted by: super dave

I've seen half so far and like them. I really enjoy Carla. I haven't had the time to catch up, but they are on my TiVo just waiting to be seen!

I liked the potential shown for the show in the first ep better than the execution of that one ep. It has since been living up to its potential. This is one of the two or three best new shows of the season, and indeed probably one of the ten or so best shows on broadcast TV these days. Give it another try. It's worth watching for Gugino and Forrester alone. If ABC yanks it, I'm about done. (Although given the patience they've shown Alias, a show that has been in an analogous situation it's entire run, I'm hoping that won't happen.)

Posted by: GoodN

It really is smart show. And thanks to USA Networks for replaying the shows. I'm one of the mindless drones who has to have his L&O fix every week!

Posted by: whoknows55

Still loving it.

Posted by: Graymalkin

Finally watched Wednesday's episode with Derwood and Dwight. Loved it. And Carlo Gugino was super hot.

Looks like the Marlins were able to win the Series with that erratic pitcher. They should give Karen a half share. :D

Posted by: RMBittner

I'm really enjoying it -- but I'm catching it when it's repeated on USA (I think). I couldn't tell you what station it normally runs on, or when.

Bob

Posted by: rasheed

I am also glad this show is airing on USA.

OK, as of this minute, Karen is my new Wednesday 9:00 HDTV date, and Law & Order gets bumped back to Saturday afternoon TiVo.

You chose... wisely.

Posted by: justapixel

I like it a lot too. It could have been so cheesy - but it's for some reason it's not at all. I think the relationship with her father helps a lot. I hardly ever even question her chasing the bad guys down while wearing 4 inch heels.
:) I hope it lasts...

Posted by: Jon J

The low cut outfit she wore in the office was particularly interesting. The camera had to continually tilt up and avoid showing too much to not look like a porn flick. ;)

She's an attractive woman but her makeup really varies. She looked 10 to 15 years older in the outdoor shots.

You should all thank me - I'm not going to start watching this show. If I DID start watching, it would apparently guarantee that it gets cancelled (if recent history is any guide).

Posted by: genearch

Damn it!

ABC pulls the plug on KS (for now at least)

that kinda sux - what else is on in that time slot. What am I supposed to watch now?

Why is it that networks think a show will do better in the spring when they don't give it a chance to find an audience now?

Well, if they're sincere, it's not a bad strategy. In the spring, the rest of the shows will be in reruns, so in theory it's a good time for a struggling show to build an audience.

Let's hope that's their intention!

...so of course she stands me up!

Oh, well, she was out of my league anyway. :D

Number One rule of guys watching TV:

All of the women are out of our league. Even the ugly ones. Accept that and just enjoy the fantasy. :D

They may think they are sincere, but just why is a show struggling? Could it be because they don't give it a chance to build an audience in the first place?

Found this on TV Tome:
ABC announced Friday that the critically acclaimed new series would be benched until next March. Speaking on behalf of her network, ABC Entertainment president Susan Lyne said, "We love this show, but it has become increasingly obvious that it's not working on Wednesday nights. Rather than give up, we're going to complete production on the remaining episodes and aggressively relaunch the series this March in a new time period." Translation: somebody made a big mistake putting Elmore Leonard's characters up against the crime fighters on NBC's Law & Order.

Why is it that networks put new shows up against established shows on other networks and not against a weak show? I know, it's all about ratings and the bottom line.

Of course, TiVo owners don't really care what night the shows are on. We time shift very effectively.

Bingo. Yes, some shows, no matter how good, never find an audience. No, Karen Sisco was unlikely to ever be a top-10 show -- too iconoclastic. But it sure felt like this could be a solid, dependable show for ABC if they would just nurture it a little bit. ABC had only ordered 13 episodes, and we've seen either six or seven of those. So when it comes back in the spring, it'll get no more of a chance to prove itself than it just got. The nets are their own worst enemies most of the time.

It will get a hell of a better chance, since it will be up against reruns of a (presumably) weaker show. If they just keep throwing it against L&O, what good will that do? Or if they start bouncing it around the schedule in hopes it will stick some place, what good will that do? All this during the holiday season, when people mostly stop watching TV anyway.

The fact that they're pulling it while there are still plenty of episodes left, and that they intend to put it in a better time slot against reruns during a period with higher viewership, shows a rather surprising commitment to the show.

Presumably the same thing that it's done for Alias, now in its third season against Law & Order.

Agreed that this isn't a good option. Very few shows profit from that sort of treatment. Still, the stigma of being pulled, even for supposedly altruistic reasons, is hard to eradicate.

Don't get me wrong; I would certainly rather it get another chance than be canceled outright. But I think the deck is stacked against the show at this point. I hope I'm wrong; I'm a big fan.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

But Alias isn't getting pounded by L&O:CI. Karen Sisco IS getting pounded by L&O. Alias can make enough ad revenue to (barely) squeak by; presumably, they're losing money on Sisco. If they leave it where it is, IT WILL DIE. The fact that they're seriously trying to find a way for it to work, rather than just tossing out the remaining episodes wherever there are holes in the schedule, gives me at least some hope.

MG, I think Robert Bianco of USA Today is a fan of yours. Saw this comment on his chat today (nope, I didn't ask the question!):

Brazil: Hi Robert! My question is about Karen Sisco. What do you think about ABC's decision to bench the show until March?

Robert Bianco: I think it was wise. Wednesday was clearly the wrong night for "Karen Sisco" - and "The Bachelor" was the wrong lead in. Leaving the show there to be pounded every week would have just killed it. At least this gives it a second chance.

You know what they say--great mindlessness operates in the same rut! :D

Posted by: snoop

I wish the network execs would adapt their strategies in different ways. For example:

"Hmmm...i'm not making enough money at work. I think i'll not show up for four months, then when I reappear magically I may be making more money!"

No fair. My G/F has been on TV! Are we doomed? :)

Posted by: RMBittner

Okay, forgive me if this is a stupid question, but why do time slots still matter to ANYONE? VCRs have made time-shifting a daily reality for just about 20 years now. And add TiVo -- which presumably has high penetration among those who make decisions in Hollywood -- to the mix, and I just don't get it. (And are there really no Nielsen families with TiVo and/or working VCRs?)

So, can anyone explain this to me? What's it going to take for the networks to sit up and realize that watching certain shows is *not* a question of choosing one show over another in a given time slot?

Bob

Posted by: Graymalkin

The vast majority of VCR owners have never used them for time shifting. Incredible, but true.

Also, network suits tailor their decisions to what's best for advertising revenue, not to the viewers' convenience. And that won't change until the time when TV is entirely pay-per-view. (And probably not even then.)

KS would have done a lot better as a lesbian. That would have at least gotten some attention. Or they could have made her bi. More guys would watch it then, thinking, "Hey, maybe I'll get to see her kiss another gal."

Oh, and there should be more blouses getting ripped off. Oh, and more cleavage. Yeah, that'll work. :D

Posted by: snoop

Better still...a mysterious alien race wants to destroy the earth, so KS is packed up and sent off to an equally mysterious expanse in space to investigate. Plus more cleavage, skimpier outfits, and more shooting up the bad guys.
