I just upgraded my phillips dsr7000 to a single WD 120 GB 8MB hard drive, but I can hear quite a bit of seeks. Seeing as this is going in my bedroom I would like to quite this down some.
Does anyone have any info if WD has acoustic management? Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Vanelin

The WD's do not have acoustic management. They are typically fairly quiet drives, however, the DSR7000 (I just bought one a couple weeks ago myself) has a thin case and no vibration dampening on the stock drive mount (I just upgraded my single drive system as well). Two things you can do (and I would recommend them in this order)...
1 - Vibration dampening mount, get inexpensive rubber washers from a hardware store. Likely a very minimal impact but every little bit helps.
2 - Acoustic dampening mats, for about $20 at your local CompUSA you can buy acoustic dampening material to line the inside of the case with. It's marketed for use in PC's...but...that's really what a TiVo is anyways. ;) I would really only suggest putting this on the top of the case (the part that comes off). If you go this route be very watchful of the temp that your DSR7000 is running at. The stuff works miracles for eliminating noise, but, it tends to bottle up heat.

I have successfuly used the Hitachi (IBM) feature tools software to quiet my WD 180GB and 120GB drive. WD does not supply the software but they do work with other software. Mine were quite noisy before I ran the above mentioned software. Now they are nice and quiet

WD does support Acoustic management, use a program available on this forum ATAAC It worked for me.

I actually went ahead and returned the WD, so I'm back to the standard 40GB.
Looks like I need to do a bit more research on some quieter drives that have the acoustic management.
ps I did try the ataac, but it said that it could never find any of my drives
thanks for your help

Try the Samsung 120GB drives. The 1204 is WHISPER quiet and you can get it for about $80-$90.
For example:

Be sure to get the 5400 RPM model, though! You don't need 7200, and it's just more heat.
