Sony T60 Rescue Mission Failed
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Fuze was kind enough to help me find a T60 image to rescue a failed HD in a T60. I followed the README in the IMAGE file very carefully. But, I'm not able to get past the FROZEN STARTING UP screen after installing the NEWLY IMAGED drive for testing.
Here's what I did:
1) Uncompressed SONY.BAK from the 16 files you sent me. No errors encountered. I copied the SONY.BAK to the root of the PRIMARY drive on a XP PRO PC (formatted with NTFS).
2) Downloaded the MFS TOOLS from
3) Burned a MFS TOOLS BOOT CD with the ISO above.
4) Used MFS TOOLS BOOT CD to test boot my XP PRO PC directly to LINUX. Did NOT put the NEW 120GB WESTERN DIGITAL drives into my PC yet. The PC booted directly to the MFS TOOLS BOOT CD without any changes to BIOS.
5) Powered down PC. Installed FIRST 120gb WD as SLAVE on PRIMARY IDE (HDB). Installed SECOND 120gb as PRIMARY on SECONDARY IDE (HDC).
6) Rebooted PC. Stopped at POST (power on self test) after AUTO detect of HD's to verify that SLAVES and MASTERS on all drives were recognized.
/dev/hda is the primary master => XP PRO C: Drive (C:\sony.bak resides)
/dev/hdb is primary slave => New 120GB WD HD (B Drive)
/dev/hdc is secondary master => New 120GB WD HD (A Drive)
/dev/hdd is secondary slave => CDROM (MFS Tools BootCD)
7) PC booted directly from MFS TOOLS BOOT CD as it did BEFORE I installed the NEW HD's.
8) Followed instructions with T60 IMAGE PRECISELY . . .
- Boot the MFS Tools BootCD and hit Enter. Make sure that the info displayed on screen matches that of your HDs (Shift+Pageup). Mount Windows C: Drive First
mkdir /mnt/dos
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
- Restore Command for Single Tivo Drive (Dual Restore not needed)
mfsrestore -s 127 -zpi /mnt/dos/sony.bak /dev/hdc
umount -f -a -r (umount not unmount)
(Ctrl+Alt+Del) (When PC rebooted, I turned off and removed A Drive)
9) Installed A DRIVE (master from SECONDARY IDE in PC) in TIVO and started TIVO up.
10) FREEZE UP!!! - TIVO T60 JUST stays on WELCOME STARTING UP screen - it cycles every few minutes.
At this point, I took the 40 gb drive from another good T60 (I had not wanted to remove the drive in that unit for fear of wrecking it also). After putting the 40gb drive in the previously torn down TIVO, it booted up ok. I then tried the NEW WD 120gb in the TIVO I had just removed the GOOD 40gb drive from. It did NOT boot. It froze at the STARTING UP screen just as the torn down TIVO did. BTW, I also verified the the OLD 40gb drive the torn down unit was defintely bad by putting it in the GOOD TIVO. That old 40gb drive did NOT start up in the GOOD TIVO just as it did NOT start up in the torn down TIVO.
So, I'm stuck. I also tried switching out the NEW SLAVE 120gb WD drive with the NEW PRIMARY 120gb WD drive. Therefore, i've tried making T60 IMAGES on TWO NEW WD 120gb drives. I also uncompressed the SONY.BAK again just to be sure no errors.
Like I said, I'm stuck. Any ideas ?
Thanks so much. I appreciate you all very much.

What version is the image you used? If it's pre-3.1 you'll need to do the runideturbo=false thing from Hinsdale to get it to boot.
It might be easier to copy 3.1 across from the working drive:
hda working TiVo disk
hdb new 120
hdc new 120
hdd CD-ROM
Boot MFS Tools 2.0 and do
mfsbackup -so - /dev/hda - | mfsrestore -s 127 -xpi - /dev/hdc /dev/hdb
Should take 10 minutes or so.

It's a virgin 3.1 Sony T-60 image. I created it after I did a "Clear and Delete Everything" to reset the serialization of the image I had put on my tivo. I just did a backup after the Clear and Delete was finished. I'm going to send him the original "non-virgin" image to see if that helps.

I'm downloading FUZE's new image (non virgin) T60 and will try that. Fuze thinks I did everything correctly, the only dif from his work being I have a NTFS C: drive formatted with XP PRO. He used an WIN98 setup.
But, linux found the NTFS C: drive fine. I even tested that it was finding the SONY.BAK image by intentially misspelling SONY.BAK as SONI.BAK. So, i don't think my NTFS drive is causing problems.
I'll try the NEW image from FUZE. I also got another image from WIRKLE (THANKS!!!). I'll try that also.
If all of those images fail, then maybe my NTFS is causing problems after all. I'll then the instructions on DRIVE to DRIVE copy from GOOD TIVO to TORN DOWN TIVO. I had not wanted to jepordize the GOOD TIVO. But, now I've already torn it down also. So, what the Hec!
Thanks to everyone. This is what makes the internet so fantastic! People like Fuze and Robert and Wirkle RULE!!!!

The serialization thing only comes into effect after the TiVo has booted.
WD's are very sensitive about jumpers - the A drive must be jumpered as 'master with slave'.
It would also be worth trying just the A drive on its own - if it can get to 'almost there' then the image is OK.

Hello, I have a T60 that has died.
I have subsequently purchased a new Philips DSR7000 (s2 dtivo). I've successfully used available tools and procedures to create a backup image of that system and install a new, larger hard drive. All is well there.
Back to the T60, which I had never previously opened or hacked, I now attempted to use the MFSTools to get an image off that drive. My hope was that I could restore to a good drive. Then I'd be able to use my T60 as a second dtivo unit.
The problem, of course, is that my original T60 drive is dead. I can't get a good image from it, so I can't replace that bad drive.... However I have noticed that folks here have been able to source T60 images. I would very much appreciate having access to a good T60 image, so I can keep my T60 from being a boat anchor.
Thanks!
