im following hinsdale word for word and when i go to type in "mfsbackup -f 9999 -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc"
its doesnt give me a progress report, rather it gives me a message saying that a drive is read - only (thats not the exact message). that was my first attempt to do the upgrade and i am gonna start again from the top and see if it worx. if anyone know why i got that error i would greatly appreciate your input. thanx alot.

Are you using a Windows XP machine?
Posted by: dayoungn
short answer yes
long answer is the hard drive worx, but never "fully installed" windows xp on the hd. some kinda **** with the cd rom was dorking up. but when i stuck the hard drive in my other computer i explored the folders and it had a c:/windows folders, and i was able to use the hd (transfer files from it and such) so im assuming yes :-)

Windows is not the issue. NTFS is the issue. You need a FAT formatted partition to write the backup file to.
If you had actually followed Hinsdale 'word for word' you might have followed the words that said "see note at end for Windows NT/2000/XP users".

Hinsdale recommends repartitioning your C: drive or finding an old hard drive. It might be easier to put a 2Gb FAT partition on your upgrade drive temporarily to write the backup to.
