XBox DVD-Rom replacement

Anyone here have experience replacing their DVD-ROM in their XBox?
I have the first generation XBox, and of late, many games seem to be acting up. I hear the drive trying to access stuff, but not having any luck. I am guessing the DVD-ROM is going out.
Can it be yanked out and put into the PC to check somehow? Is there a free test suite that can be ran on the drive to see what the problem is?
I see the replacements on the net for $70 or so.
I need a solution that doesn't require a mod chip.

The power lead on Xbox DVD-ROMs are proprietary unfortunately. You cannot put them in a PC unles you want to build your own converter.
My advice would be to get one off of eBay. It is a simple drop in replacement that shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes. (Make sure you have a #20 and #10 torx though!)
Try to find a Samsung Xbox DVD-ROM. They are the most reliable. Avoid Thompsons like the plague.

How about trying one of those laser lens cleaners that sell for $10 everywhere?

Did that, several times.
I wonder if it is the Thompson drive is just bad, since I have seen others recommend the Samsung over the Thompson.
Anyone know about the Samsung 616 mod?
