Dish Network PVR Features?

I have had a SA TiVo for 2 years now, and a DirectTivo for the last 6 months. Like everyone else here, I think they are the greatest invention since sliced bread. However, I had exactly zero luck in convincing any of my friends, co-workers or relatives the benefits of Tivo.
One co-worker actually had a Dish PVR (the 501, I think) but he claims he never used it at all, not even the live buffer. He recently purchased an HDVR2 from Circuit City and actually let the installer talk him out of it. The installer put in a regular receiver that he had with him, and my co-worker took the HDVR2 back to Circuit City. When I asked him his reason, he said that he "never watched a movie more than one anyway". Some people just don't get it.
Anyway, the reason for this post is that now my son-in-law, who already has Dish Network, wants to get a PVR. Both he and my daughter are avid TV watchers (they subscribe to EVERY channel), but like a lot of people, do not like the hassle or recording anything to a VCR.
My understanding is that the Dish Network PVR's are basically just glorified VCR's, and if a person will not use a VCR, they probably will not use the PVR either.
I searched the internet, but could not find any site that listed exactly what the latest Dish Network PVR721 will and will not do. Next time I have this discussion with them, I want to be loaded with info. Can anyone list exactly what the PVR721 will NOT do, or know of a site that has a comparison chart?

The DishPVRs cannot record by Season Pass, i.e. they record by timeslot, and don't have the conflict resolution power that TiVo has. TiVo records by name, so you can tell it to record all episodes of X show. You can set TiVo's Season pass to record new episodes only, new episodes and reruns, or all episodes including repeats. With the DishPVR, you give it a date and time to record, just like a VCR, and that's it. If the show moves timeslots or has a double episode, you will still get it with TiVo, but not with the DishPVR. You can use a standalone Tivo with any cable/sat company if you ever end up switching. TiVo is also a more stable platform. The DishPVRs tend to be crashy.
On the other hand, the DishPVR will have better image quality and two tuners, while a standalone TiVo must use MPEG compression and comes with only one tuner.
You should also look into switching to DirecTV and getting the DirecTivo. Best of both worlds.

Why not take a look at the Dish Network PVRs in the AVS forum?
I just happened on this post from there:quote:

I think most Dishplayer owners are more enamored of Dish than it's DVR.

Thanks for the responses. That was the info I was looking for. And, by the way, I guess I did not clarify myself very well, but I do have a HDVR2 myself, along with a SA that I use for Locals and my BUD.
