Have not bought TIVO yet, but need to know, is it possible to tape to a show on TIVO to a VHS?
Thx, Dinkysmom

If the question you're asking is "Can I transfer a show from Tivo to a VHS tape", the answer is yes. You hook up the VCR to the Tivo, select 'Save to VCR' from a Tivo recording, press record on your VCR, and you're all set.

Yes, you can dump a show to VCR. It's very simple. If you have any questions once you get your TiVo, feel free to ask.

And, before anyone asks. You can dump to a DVD recorder just as easy.:)

[rant] The only problem is that TiVo has decided nobody really wants to do this, so if you have several episodes of a show to dump to tape you have to sit there and babysit the VCR/TiVo, you can't just set it to record for 8 hours and pop in a tape and come back with it all done. It is something they could do. Did do for Pioneer, but they said there is no demand (ie. no money in it for them) so they won't bother giving one of the most demanded features on here to their customers. They'll just tell them they don't want it instead...[/rant]

It does work pretty good for a two hour movie tho', especially if your hard drive fills up and you want to transfer a movie to tape, so you'll have some room on the drive

Just to be fair, I don't believe TiVo ever actually said any such thing. It's just the logical conclusion to be drawn when they release a software update that doesn't contain the feature you want. Either they're insane, or they prioritized the requested features and yours didn't make the cut. As passionate as you are about a particular feature, they're running a business and have to weigh that against lots of other features.
And I believe that soft padding and an FSI are far more commonly requested features, and we don't have them, either.

You may want to send your Tivo recording to VCR without commercials. To do this you must watch a recorded program as you normally would on Tivo and be recording on your VCR. As a commercial break begins, skip through just as you normally would but leave your VCR recording. The drawbacks of this are obviously the fact that you can't leave while recording. However, I believe this to be a lesser drawback than OLD FASHIONED fast forwarding on your VCR that you would have to do EVERY single time you watch that VHS recording. Perhaps Tivo will add future control of VCR dumping that will allow users to skip during output but for now I find it better NOT use the "Save to VCR" feature.

Both are now available via hacks, as is the batch save to VCR feature (in a kludgey way). I sometimes wonder if by creating the hacks to support these features ourselves, we have reduced the incentive for TiVo to support them officially….

I believe most hacks are irrelevant to TiVo, since they're only used by a handful of people. It may be cool in a techie sort of way that there are hacks available for these features, but that doesn't impact the TiVo consumer base in any measurable way.

I agree that hacks are virtually irrelevant to TiVo. There are really an extremely small percentage of users who are willing to hack their boxes and add features that may threaten the stability of their system. Not to mention that with the growth TiVo is experiencing now and the fact that all new boxes sold are Series 2, the hacks don't even apply to most of the new subscribers.

I'm always amused when someone asks if there's a way to do something in this forum and the only answer they get is that there's a hack for it. I know the hack people are just trying to be helpful, but to the average user such an answer has exactly the same effect as if they'd said "No".
