Alias: Bye bye to Mommy

The gist is, Lena Olin made some demands for returning to Alias, the producers gave her what she wanted--and she still said no.

Kinda sounds like one of those situations where she didn't want to do the show, but didn't want to say no, so she made demands that she assumed they wouldn't accept, and was taken by surprise when they did.

Either that, or the producers are lying.

They're ALL lying. (This is Alias, after all.)

I'd noticed how they kept her out of sight this season. Maybe they could hire another actress and say she disguised herself with plastic surgery? Oops, they already used Marshall's X-ray camera for that once, and we all know that his inventions can only ever be used once... ;)

I was about to write that Ken Olin and Lena Olin were related

but after investigating it ... no relation!

I ho[pe she comes back ... but shes not that worth it if you ask me (as an actress)

But she IS worth it as a character. The dynamic Mommy brought to the show was fantastic...

I thought she was terrific. She, Victor Garber, Ron Rifkin, and Jennifer Garner made up the most talented cast in prime time, save perhaps Frasier. I'm surprised she wouldn't agree to come back -- the show gave her a lot of buzz and an Emmy nomination.

what i mean is ... is NOT that important of an actress to pull down what ... say ... Jenifer Garner is pulling

as a character I totally agree

Did she not have a signed contract ... i cant believe she didnt

Well, she's a major movie star. I suspect she had a contract for last season only, and they felt they were lucky to get that much. Obviously, they were hoping for more, but they didn't get it.

Shame though, she was a great character, and she is a great actress.

Mommy will now be replaced by Grandmama, played by Marion Ross. :D

Heh.

Marion Ross might not be a bad choice...that woman is deceptively nasty when she wants to be!

I mean that in a good way. I remember her on Politically Incorrect around the time of the OJ Simpson civil trial. The defense had just paraded the jury through Simpson's home, and it had been revealed that the lawyers had rearranged things in advance to make a favorable impression. Most of the panel were teeing off on Simpson and his lawyers, and Ross was putting up a very strange, ditzy defense of Simpson, having something to do with housecleaning. Bill Mahrer was amused, but also exasperated, and kept trying in vain to get her to admit there was something wrong with what the lawyers had done. Finally, he asked her (rhetorically), "Would YOU move a painting out of the living room if a jury was visiting your house?" "Well, no," she said, the perfect image of sweetness, innocence, and slight mental deficiency. "But then, I'm not a murderer..."

You give her more credit than she deserves. She certainly has a good career, but she is not a movie star in any way. Working actress would be a more accurate description. She would never get billing above title or director approval or anything like that. Frankly the money she turned down (if the figure are accurate) was pretty good loot to turn away for a 48 year old journeyman actress.

Umm...never?!?

Just for kicks, Jennifer Garner's list:

(A TV Hallmark Special. She doesn't even get above-the-title credits in Alias!)

You may not recall, but when Olin was hired to do Alias, it made a big splash that they had gotten an actor of her stature for the role. Lena Olin is the Real Thing.

Rob,

You actually forgot the scintillating Daredevil!

No, actually, I didn't!

I assume for Elektra, however, that will change...

Posted by: cptodd

What do you mean that you assume for Elektra?

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

I mean, I assume the credits will go something like:

Jennifer Garner
in
Elektra

No, it's going to be

Jennifer Garner's Body in Tight Clothes
in
Elektra

Silly boy. Everybody knows that the "'s body in tight clothes" is silent! :D

Posted by: cptodd

OK I am righteously confused. I was originally commenting on the fact that you listed many if not all of Lina Olin's credits and you only l listed one of Ms. Garner's. So I added that horrible movie Daredevil. Now how does the get to the body and tight clothes etc?

I was citing the credits for Olin and Garner in which they appear above the title. Olin often, Garner almost never. I assume that in Elektra, Garner will indeed be above the title.

Tight clothes wasn't me! (Well, I didn't start it. :D)

Posted by: Family

Why couldn't they just have the mother have a Francie type of facial change?

Posted by: bicker

Since they have not yet written the season finale, there is no reason to believe that your idea may not yet become reality.

OH I SEE! Thanks.

Hey!

Could Francie be her mom?

Posted by: Sirius Black

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
I thought Francie, as opposed to the imposter, was dead.

Is that how it appeared on screen or on the DVD? Usually there is a difference. IN any event, I still think Lena Olin is far from a major movie star. She sure can't open a movie like Julia Roberts or Tom Cruise can. These days' the money is made in the first three weeks. If your name can't open a movie, you will never get the big bucks. The fact that she was arguing over 100 per episode tells you that.

Posted by: bicker

What I heard is that there was no argument about the amount: The producers met her financial requirements, and she simply decided to pursue other interests. The fact is that she is a big-enough actress to pick and choose what work she'll do.

Maybe her demands had nothing to do with money, but didn't want to be cooped in a see-through cell one more minute. Sheees. She signed onto an action show to find out here character was (almost) always going to be crammed in a glass enclosure. The most emoting she would do was to occasionally hold her hand up to the glass. They eventually let her out and sit at a keyboard. And finally allowed her to actually run around with the rest of the agents.

This year's plot probably was going to put her back in shackles and she figured any animal at a zoo could play that part and decided to roam free while the roaming was good. :-)

I liked her character alot and still hope to see her. Shackled, enclosed and all!
