I just installed a new Pioneer DVD-R w/ TiVo, and tried to use a D-Link DWL-122, but the DVR unit will not recognize it (I only see Phone options - networking is not shown at all in the setup menus).

Any tips or tricks I can use to make the DVR unit recognize this wireless device?

It sounds like support for this device is only in a beta version of the 4.0.1a software. Since your Pioneer is running 5.x you probably should get an adapter already listed as "known to work":
