How can this Tivo be at 53C?

I have this Tivo in a 75 degree house with the stock 40GB drive and an added WD1200 7200rpm 120GB. There are 6" of space behind the unit, it's up on half-inch spacers, it has no cover, and it still runs at 53C. I don't think the tv underneath gets overly warm. What else can I do to cool this down?

Well you can either replace the stock fan with a better one, add a new fan, or simply take a normal fan and put it on the outside blowing air over the open unit. That should sufficiently cool it down

Put the cover back on. It will cool down.
In-unit airflow is designed with the cover on. Removing the cover reduces the forced airflow over the hot parts.

The unit ran 56C+ before I took the cover off, otherwise I would have left it on. Which makes more sense - a second fan in parallel to the first or replacing the fan entirely?

Is the shelf you have the unit on completely enclosed (picture shows wood on back). I had mine in an enclosed entertainment shelf it heated up to 54. After I removed the back from the shelf the unit was on, temp went down to a safe 40-44.
PS. I do see you describe 6 inches space behind unit, that should be enough, but who knows. One sign to look for is if the back of the shelf is hot also there is not enough space.

Yes, the back of the shelf has some of that fake wood backing and a hole for all the cords. I'll try taking that off tonight and see what happens.

I cut an exhaust hole in the backing of the Tivo shelf, approximately 8" across and 4" high. I then put the cover back on. To my amazement, temperatures dropped from 53C all the way down to 45C.
I have a ThermoFlow fan, but with temperatures at 45C I don't really need it. Anyone interested?

That was going to be my suggestion. Need a cool-in, hot-out path.

I actually installed the ThermoFlow fan anyway (can never be too cool, right?) and the tivo is now down to 38C. This is in a 77 degree apartment, so I'm happy. The ThermoFlow is definitely louder than stock, but I can't really hear it when the TV is on. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
