Help! I've had my Tivo for about 2.5 years and just this week, it has started recording any show longer than an hour as three 45 minute partial recordings. Any ideas? Nothing has changed otherwise.
Thanks!

Is the TiVo rebooting?
Posted by: ptroost
Wait, maybe it is rebooting -- I just looked in the Tivo Web Project info page and it's only reporting 4 hours and 42 minutes of uptime. Temperature is 34C -- I don't know if that's hot or normal. Any ideas of what would cause random rebooting?

34C sounds pretty normal. You don't say what kind of Tivo you have but if it's a standalone then a possible cause of "random" rebooting is if Tivo detects that it hasn't got an input signal.

If it's rebooting in the middle of a recording, then it's unlikely to be due to loss of signal.
Have a look at the logs and see if there's a mention of something in the software triggering the reboot. Otherwise, I'd be thinking power problems.

I had mega random reboots due to hard-drive troubles.

I found another post in the forum which talked about random reboots being caused by erroneous program guide data / channel lineup issues. It recommended either restoring from backup or using the Tivo option to delete all program guide data and season pass information. I chose the former :)
Interestingly enough, Tivo had just sent down a lineup change where they added HBOSIG on channel 74. Unfortunately, HBOSIG was still on channel 64 as well, and COMEDY was also mapped to 74. I suspect that may have caused the problem. I called Tivo and got a 25 minute hold queue so I sent them an e-mail instead.
In the meantime, I tried to restore my MFSTOOLS 2.0 backup image from a couple months ago onto my drives -- original Quantum 13GB A Drive and Maxtor 80GB B Drive. Unfortunately, I received an error message stating that the target drive was too small for the restore. Another quick search of the forum revealed that sometimes the drives do not properly divorce in the backup.
A quick trip to "BestBuy" later and I was able to successfully restore onto a new Seagate 120GB A drive. I then wrote a quick script to remap the second HBOSIG to 64 as well. I now have two HBOSIG's listed on 64 and COMEDY where it should be on 74. So far so good.
Since so much changed (lineup, harddrive, OS environment) I don't know if I'll ever isolate what it was unless TIVO blasts me another lineup change to put HBOSIG back on 74 and the problem starts happening again -- then I'll know.
In the meantime, all I lost was 10 episodes of "I Love the Seventies"...wish they'd come out with the DVD. Thanks all for the help.
