Trying to backup/install Turbonet drivers on SVR2000 FACTORY Maxtor HD - noob q's

I bought my TurboNET card about a year ago and finally got it installed. I am not attempting to upgrade the HD, so that's why I'm posting it here. I have used the search function in both this forum and the upgrade forum, but it seems that everyone else decided to upgrade their HD AND install the Turbonet card at the same time. I guess I didn't want to do that. :>
I have the Sony SVR2000, received around September of 2001. It has a Maxtor 30GB drive (I'm not sure the exact serial of it since it's at home.) I am using Keegan's book and accompanying CD.
I finally got things working in my machine and was able to have both my primary and my TiVo slave (with the jumper changed) seen in the BIOS. (There was a slight scare where XP started to load because when you change the drive configuration, so does the boot order in the BIOS...but luckily I pulled the plug before it wrote that TiVo-killing signature onto the slave drive.) However, "checkdrivesetup" shows the Maxtor at 10MB, indicating that the drive is locked, even though the kernel has the unlocking feature written into it.
Now, like I said, I did do a search on this, and I have read many many many times in very large font never use qunlock on a Maxtor drive for any reason. I have never run qunlock. And the drive still runs fine - I gave up and put my TiVo back together and it's about to record the Daily Show, so the TiVo is still locking/unlocking the drive, and I'm still able to watch my recordings and everything.
All I want to do is backup the OS and install the TiVo hacks to get a bash prompt and be done with it. I'm not comfortable hot-swapping the drive after the TiVo has unlocked it, really. Would the Western Digital tool work in this case? Or would qunlock actually work in my situation since it is a factory TiVo drive?
If there is a post that explains it, I must have missed it, and will accept a link or a search term that would make me feel like an idiot for asking a question that's been asked before.
(I had thought installing the TurboNET card and running the wire out of the TiVo would have been the hard part - that was the easy part compared to all this...)

I think the qunlock situation is for the large Maxtor ROM'd drives, not the older Quantum (or Quantum ROM'd) drives - esp the 120GB 2MB Cache drives.
I have never had a drive locking problem, the MFSTools 2.0 disk does its thing for me (but I don't have a SVR2000).
