I have a unit with no hard drive. All the upgrade instructions I find seem to be for units with a drive intact. What steps do I need to take to get this unit functioning with a new blank drive? Sorry if this has been answered a mil times already, but I haven't been able to find a simple answer.

Download a backup (Google is very useful for find things on the Internet, I hear...). Unpack it and save it as c:\tivo.bak and then follow the Hinsdale How-to.

Thanks. I googled and got what I need. Now another question. I have xp on my computer, and I've read all the problems associated with booting into xp with the tivo drives attached. Can I unpack it, save it to a cd-r and restore it from there. Basically i'd like to use both my cd drives one with the tools cd, one with the backup, and do both new drives at once. Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually, none of those problems apply to you. You should be able to follow Hinsdale precisely. Just don't boot XP after you've restored the backup or you'll have to do it again.
