Upgrade tivo to 3.0 with dead modem series 1

I have successfully configured an external modem for my series 1 Tivo with software 3.0, but I have another tivo series one with software 2. A damn electrical storm blew out both my modems. So, what I was wondering if anyone knew how I could upgrade my software to 3.0 on my tivo and use an external modem or if anyone had a 3.0 software boot disk? Thanks for your help...this forum is the best.

You'd have to restore a 3.0 backup to its hard drive. This would not be healthy for the recordings on that unit.

Back up the unit with 3.0 and restore it on the other unit.
Are they both the same brand?

I actually have 3 tivos, two sony svr-2000 and a philips hdr212. The one I have the older software on is the phillips. Can I put the phillips hard drive in the Sony? Thanks for the quick reply

no. dont put a phillips in a sony. It will not work. why not use the extrenal modem on the phillips and let it dial and upgrade??

Because the external modem only works with 3.0?
A quick Google will turn up a 3.0 image for the 112, which will do the trick.

OK, I'll give Google a try. The external modem only dials out on software 3.0 for some reason, or that is what I am told, never tried it though...maybe I'll try that first, but do I have to back up something first? I think all I have to do is burn the image to the disk and boot from the cd after I install it in my computer? Thanks again for the fast reply.

The image and the tools are two separate things. You need to create a boot CD or floppy so you can run MFS Tools. You can also put the backup on a CD, but most people just read it off their C: drive.
You need to read Hinsdale.
