upgraded by 10 hr philips tivo with a 100 mb hard drive about 2 years ago. it now skips and stutters recorded video to make it unwatchable. i have done a complete delete and reinstall. no difference. is my hard drive dying a slow death. i did use the hd to it's maximum in the past 2 years so i am not surprised. what is the community recommendation? replace hd or replace tivo for a gen2.

Skips and stutters seems like a classic hard drive failure to me.

Replace the drive. Even if that doesn't fix it, you can always put it in a replacement TiVo.

The drive is very probably still in warranty.

If you want the Series 2 features (HMO, folders, future updates) that's a reason to upgrade. Otherwise, your box is pretty similar to a Series 2 box. If you have lifetime service, then you probably want to keep the old box and fix it.

i do have a lifetime service.

this "bad" hd. can i use it for a pc or is it truly bit the dust?

do i do a surface scan blah blah blah or just say $100 = 2 years good video...
... move on.
