Killer "Firefly" deal at Suncoast
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Jorgasnarova
Good evening.
Fans of the defunct FOX show, Josh Whedon's "Firefly" will be pleased to learn the show is being released on DVD on Dec 9th and will include previously unbroadcast episodes.
Suncoast Video currently has a kiiler deal on "Firefly" for in-the-store, in-person pre-orders. Five dollars down as a deposit, with an additional $14.99 plus tax at time of pick-up. That's right! $19.99 for "Firefly!" Buy.com, by contrast, has the DVD set for $37.38.
Just phoned my local Suncoast to confirm, and yes this is legit. So drop over to your Suncoast before Dec 9th for this killer deal.
Posted by: David Platt
Wow, that is an excellent deal! I'm cancelling my Barnes & Noble pre-order and heading out to Suncoast tomorrow afternoon after I confirm they'll do this at my local store.

Anyone know if there's a Suncoast video store in Suffolk County, Long Island? The store finder is not in service at suncoast.com, and I tried online searches at Verizon Super Pages, Smith Haven Mall, South Shore Mall, Roosevelt Field Mall, and Tanger Outlet, but so far no luck. I know I haven't seen one in person here. Anyone else from LI know where a Suncoast is hidden?
Posted by: jerobi
drew,
Go to SwitchBoard and search the white pages for it. That should help you locate the, uh, location.
Posted by: retrodog
Unless they are paying me to take it, it's not a "killer" deal.
j/k, it was a pretty good show. Well relatively speaking anyway. ;)
Posted by: speedy4022
Thanks for heads up I will be checking my local store in the morning to see if they honor this deal.
Posted by: Peter000
Cool! I'm gonna check it out! Thanks for the tip!
Edit: This must be some strange in-store deal... I check their website, and Firefly was listing for about 20 bucks more than that.

There should be one at Broadway Mall in Hicksville, though I have not been to that mall in some time.

Suncoast is owned by Media Play. Are they honoring this deal?
Posted by: whitson77
I called the Suncoast in Collin Creek Mall in Plano, Texas and they are honoring this deal. Amazing.
Posted by: Skittles
No kidding, whitson??
I may need to hit Collin Creek Mall today. I've never seen Firefly, nor do I have a clue what it's about... but considering how much I love Buffy (and half-love Angel), and that it's only $20, I'll give Firefly a shot.
Posted by: mwhip
I will keep my pre-order from Deep Discount DVD. I have not been in a mall since '95, and this is not going to get me in one.
Posted by: whitson77
It is a pretty decent show. Nothing great. I was sad when the gave it the axe so quick. I hope that like Family Guy if enough people buy enough DVD's they will greenlight a film that will give us closure. Plus if I want I could buy two and break even reselling one.

This was on my Hanukah wish list. I just e-mailed the info to my wife, hoping that there's still room in the Hanukah shopping budget for this. I won't find out until mid-December, but I'm hoping . . .

Their store finder is not working...
Does anyone know if there are still any Suncoasts in San Diego?
thanks,

Suncoast, Sam Goody, Media Play and On Cue are all owned by the Musicland Group (I work for Sam Goody). I haven't heard of any special deal on Firefly, but since I work at Sam Goody I deal mostly with music. Normally any price/promotion that's offered at one store (i.e. Suncoast) is honored at the other stores (i.e. Sam Goody). So, if you don't have a Suncoast near you, perhaps you have a Sam Goody, Media Play or On Cue. Again, I haven't heard about any such deal, but it may be worth checking into if you don't have a Suncoast near you.
P.S.- Until February, the Musicland Group was a subsidiary of Best Buy. This is no longer the case so Best Buy most likely won't honor this deal.

I tried the Sam Goody near me last night, and the guy looked at me like I was crazy. YMMV

so I take it the suncoast stores are the only ones offering this deal. I preordered mine yesterday at my local store. Once again thanks for the heads up.
Posted by: jones07
Thanks for the info. ;)
Hope there's a Suncoast in or close to Philly
Posted by: aschucher
I just confirmed the deal at my SunCoast (in Miami) and cancelled my Amazon pre-order. Thanks for the heads up.

Woo hoo! There's a Suncoast at the Broadway Mall next to Ikea! Maybe I'll get Firefly with some swedish meatballs ... :D
Posted by: speedy4022
So how many people so far were able to get in on this deal? did any of the other stores mentioned honor this deal? I wonder if best buy will honor the price match I don't think they will this is an in store only preorder promotion so I do not think best buy's price match applies but I am still curious what others are finding out. Lucky for me I have suncoast store in the area.

The Suncoast at Metrocenter here in Phoenix honored the deal. I jumped on it last night and have the pre-order slip in my hot little hand. I was debating whether ot not to get the box set because I've already seen the 3 unaired episodes, but I can't pass up a deal this hot.:D

must....resist...
:D
That being said (of necessity, you understand!) I'm in on this one, too. I can't wait to pick it up!! Thanks for the tip, jorgasnarova!

Confirmed the deal here in Indy as well. I'm going to put my $5 down tomorrow, God help me :)
Posted by: sigma957
I got the same deal at my local Sam Goody (we do not have Suncoast in Denver). They had to look it up, but the pre-order price said $20.
Posted by: Ladd Morse
Suncoast in Frederick, Maryland said that yes, $19.99 (plus tax) was the price for the Firefly DVD box set. Available for pickup in-store on December 9.
Sure beats waiting to receive my Amazon order until December 18 for $34. Suncoast order paid for, Amazon order cancelled!
Posted by: tivospav
Suncoast in Strongsville, OH (Cleveland), was purchased today for the 19.99. In-store pick-up on Dec. 9th.

Just curious how you heard about this deal? :-) I'd love to keep an eye out for other potential deals like this at Suncoast.
Thanks!

According to several posts on another forum, it looks like this deal may now be dead if you haven't got in on it already. This week's updated price list at Suncoast has Firefly listed at a pre-order price of $39.95.
Posted by: DanT
Glad I got in on this Friday morning. Hopefully they honor the original (mistaken) pricing.
Posted by: Peter000
I called one of my local Suncoasts here in MN, and they are still honoring the 19.99 deal. :-) Even if you don't preorder it, it's something like 29 bucks... still cheaper than anywhere online.
Edit: Yep, I went over there this afternoon and prepaid. The guy referred to a list of pre-release titles and that was the price. :-) I asked why it was so cheap compared to their online price and he said "If you like, I can charge you more..." I gracefully declined. He basically had no idea of their pricing policy.
Posted by: grins
Got the deal yesterday north of Chicago in Illinois. She showed me the printout listing it at 19.99 final cost.
She also said "Are you with that other guy? You're the second one in 15 minutes to ask for this deal!" ;)
Posted by: jones07
So when is this deal over ?
Posted by: BeanMeScot
I got this deal at Media Play on Wednesday. The guy looked it up on his computer and sure enough it said $19.99! I did 4.

I think the deal ends December 9th as that is the release date and the deal is for preorders.

Went to Suncoast in Everett WA last Thursday and was told they would not honor the deal. Their price was $39.99. I was told the $19.99 price was in error. So I went to the next closest Suncoast in Alderwood (about 20 minutes away) and got it for $19.99. It showed up on their list at that price.
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
Sounds like it's taking time for knowledge of the pricing error to work its way through the system...
Posted by: DJHall
I tried to get this deal at the Solano Mall Suncoast yesterday and was told the regular price is $49.99 and pre-orders are $39.99. I came home, ran an internet search for "Suncoast" and "Firefly", and found several posts saying the $19.99/$29.99 pricing is an error that has been corrected in the most current price guide issued to stores. I called five stores in the area, and three had the $39.99 price while two still had the $19.99 price.
This morning I called the Sacramento Downtown Plaza Suncoast store, confirmed they still showed $19.99 as the current price, went in, and got my copy for $20! Thanks for the info guys.
Posted by: speedy4022
I thought of a possible pricing error when I preordered mine so I paid the entire 19.99 plus tax so they could not weasel out of the deal. I would recommend everyone else pay the full amount. Because I think there might be a problem with paying the 5 dollars if they catch a pricing error they may decide to charge you the updated amount. I would definitely check my receipt to see if the price is wrote down.
Posted by: speedy4022
I did a search and this post concerned me http://www.bureau42.com/view/1655 if you scroll to the bottom I person says suncoast has changed preorder prices in the past. Also here is another link mentioning the deal http://www.sciscoop.com/story/2003/11/17/165715/89
Posted by: speedy4022
I found this on fireflyfans.net http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=2798 Jorgasnarova can I assume by the post in this thread that this where you found out about the deal. The link also mentions the 19.99 price is only good til 11/29. Anybody get this deal after 11/29? Also if this is pricing error do not count on the stores honoring this price. The following is from suncoast's web site
Prices and availability are subject to change without notice.
Errors will be corrected where discovered, and TMG reserves the right to revoke any stated offer and to correct any errors, inaccuracies or omissions including after an order has been submitted and whether or not the order has been confirmed and your credit card charged. If your credit card has already been charged for the purchase and your order is cancelled, TMG will issue a credit to your credit card account in the amount of the charge. Individual bank policies will dictate when this amount is credited to your account. If you are not fully satisfied with your purchase, you may return it in accordance with the Suncoast.coms Return Policy

Hmm... I wonder if that is even legal when you've already made a sale, collected the money, and issued a receipt. I paid in full, and my sales slip lists both the agreed upon sales price and my payment.
I guess all we can do is wait and see.
Posted by: lpwcomp
I went ahead and pre-ordered it at Media Play for 19.99 on 11/29. Didn't have to push them at all. I just asked what the pre-order price was an that is what was on the computer.
I have heard from a couple of other sources that it isn't wide screen but at that price, I decided to go ahead and get it anyway. It is worth that much just to get the two eps that weren't shown.
Posted by: IndyJones1023
Anyone order extras? I called today and was going to go in on my lunch hour to get the $20 deal but my local stores say no dice. So I'm outta luck. If anyone ordered more than 1 set they want to sell, please PM me. I'll PayPal you (or send check) the cost plus shipping to 32703. Thanks!
EDIT: Nevermind, found a mall nearby still honoring the deal.
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
IT IS WIDESCREEN!
Sorry. But that myth has been debunked.
Posted by: Ladd Morse
Just got back from the local Suncoast Video where I picked up my $20 pre-order Firefly box set.
Some momentary confusion behind the register when they noted the list price of $49.99 on the box and my paid-in-full pre-order receipt for $19.99, but they simply said "hey -- good price!" and I was on my way.
I checked the four jewel cases and all discs were present and accounted for! :-)

I just picked up mine too. The woman behind the counter told me the deal was supposed to be $10 off the regular $50 price but that someone at "corporate" screwed up, so we got a better deal than we were supposed to. Shiny!

I thought it was something like that. I was sure that they wouldn't honor the $20 price.
Boy am I glad I didn't pre-order this thing from Amazon!
Posted by: mizterd99
I picked my pre-ordered copy up for a total of 19.99 ($5 down and the balance + tax paid today) today. The guy told me that the pre-order price was a mistake but that they were honoring it (although it sounded like it was a store decision and not a corporate one.. but I'm sure if you complain enough even the bitchiest stores will cave). He also said that the DVDs came with a display sign saying that there was a sale price of $20 (which he had taken down).
Posted by: IndyJones1023
Got mine!
Posted by: Cathy/Vik
By the time I'd seen this thread and called Sunday, mine had fixed the glitch...
But my amazon discs should be on the way soon at least...
Posted by: DJHall
Picked up mine today as well. They said the $20 price was a mistake but they were honoring it. They seemed a little grouchy about it, but I walked out a very happy customer.
Thanks again everyone. I never would have known about this if I hadn't seen it here.

It was a very tempting deal, but I just couldn't face two trips to the mall. I grabbed it from Costco today for 31.99 while I already had to be there for groceries. I just consider the extra $12 my antimall surcharge. I hope TiVo isn't grabbing anything too interesting today. I'd like to start watching these tonight.
Posted by: BeanMeScot
I picked up my reserved ones at Media Play today. No problem with the price. There was no sale price tag on the display. When she scanned it, it said $39.99 (sticker price said $44.99). After she scanned it, she did a bunch of keying and then I saw the price changed to $19.99. I did not even have to say anything, she just did it. She did not even look at my reservation slip. I got the impression I could have purchased it, even today without a presale receipt, for the $19.99. It was like they had already been informed to change the price. I asked her as I left if that was the sale price, and she said yes.

A dollar or two is not worth quibbling over. For $12, I don't mind a trip to the mall (although I did not have to since I got it at Media Play).

I just picked up mine today as well. I live in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and I preordered mine at Valley View Mall. When I picked it up, they mentioned that I was the only one at that location getting it at 20.00. Suncoast had made the "correction" the next day after I preordered. They said a bunch a people had come in asking for the 20.00 price. They also said the price was "posted somewhere on the Internet".

Just finished watching one of the unaired episodes. Gotta say it again, what were those brain donors thinking when they canceled this show?
Posted by: tivospav
Picked up my paid in full order from Suncoast. They had to get a manager involved, and he seemed a bit miffed, told me that it should've been written up as 39.99, but since my slip had the 19.99 (plus tax) written there, they had to honor that price. He started making some calls after that. I had to wait some for them to void the first transaction, but in the end, it was done for the 19.99 plus tax.
We're watching from the beginning again...damn are we still pissed at Fox.

Actually when I decided not to take the two trips to the mall, I was deciding based on having to pay closer to $20 extra, so I was happy to find it for $12 more.
I don't like the mall any time of the year, but I especially hate it during the holidays.
Just waiting for the kid to go to bed so we can start watching.
:)

I got my copy tonight as well. They tried to charge me the full 39.99, but I said I reserved it at the pre-order price of 19.99. They checked the list for the day I pre-ordered it, and gave me the deal. I'll go to the mall to save 20 bucks. Well 15 off of the Amazon price.
And I found if I leave the house, I find I can actually talk to and meet new people! :) Amazing.
Posted by: speedy4022
Well I am glad to see there were no major problems I picked mine up at suncoast no problem however the clerk and manager did seem a bit grumpy about the error. The funny thing was they were sent price markers for the 19.99 price and changed them when they put the DVDs out on the shelf. One minor complaint though I wished the audio would been Dolby digital 5.1

I watched "Trash" late last nite and had exactly the same thoughts :(
Such a great show, cut down way before it ever had a chance.
I still hold out hope that this could be another case similar to the soon to be revived Family Guy, but Fox just doesn't seem that smart.
Still looking forward to seeing the other "unaired" episodes and rewatching (in proper order) the originally aired episodes.
BTW - the episodes are NOT, I repeat NOT, in airdate order. FOX screwed that up when they forced Joss Whedon and Co. to air "Train Job" as the first episode (which doomed the series in many peoples minds). The episodes are in a completely different order on the discs, apparently in proper order.
All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you for these discs being available. Its just a darn shame that FOX (one of it's Corporate divisions) is profiting from the sale of the DVDs. I wish *they* had made the pricing errors everywhere and were taking a huge loss on this one. They should have to give the discs away to all of the fans just to make good on the promise this show had.
Posted by: Jonathan_S
I picked mine last night for the $19.95 price. Haven't had a chance to watch the unaired episodes yet though.
Posted by: dmets
If you haven't yet, plop in disk 4 and watch the gag reel... My wife loved it! Have to admit it was a nice end... ;-)
BTW - Suncoast at Polaris in Columbus $19.99! Took some keying by the register guy - but no complaints....
Posted by: HTH
The deal wasn't good enough for me to drive to Omaha (no Suncoast stores in Lincoln). And since I had other things to order at Amazon, I bought from there. I get mine in 4 to 8 business days.

For them to be able to donate, they'd have to have a brain........
I'm waiting for my set to come from Amazon........
Posted by: Peter000
Just watched two of the unaired eps. Gotta say, for many of the eps, airdate order doesn't really matter. At least the ones I did see. But they were very good. I think I'll just gradually go through the whole set an episode at a time, in order. I've only seen the ones that DID air once or at most twice, and don't remember many details. It's well worth the 20 bucks I spent at Suncoast. Don't know if I would have spent double that though. Buffy season DVDs are about the same price, and there are more eps.
The production value of the DVDs are fantastic! Great transfer, good sound, Commentaries on various eps, other fun extras. I like the slim clamshell cases in which the DVD's are enclosed rather than the fold-out cases other Season series are packaged in.
This series did deserve a better fate than it got. It needs some closure, or to be picked up on Sci-Fi or FX or USA or TNT with new eps. :)
