How do I run turbonet without damn dhcp!!

Hi,

I got my turbonet all working and I can ftp, telnet into the box, using fixed ips as i do not run a dhcp server.

However if I ping a external ip from the telnet prompt coming from my tivo it fails to connect. I can ping internal ips perfectly.

I checked and the 'gateway' setting has got DHCP listed - not the IP address I assigned.

My question - how the hell do i get rid of the DHCP and make my IP address I assign stay?

I have tried everything and its very frustrating. Obviously there are some files that need modifying..

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks!

Hi,

If you can telnet into your tivo then run 'nic_config_tivo'

so are you saying that running "nic_config_tivo" will allow me to set the TiVo to a static IP address?? Will this work with Series 1 TiVos? Do I need to install anything else? I am at work now, but look forward to trying this later tonight.

any more help would be great.

thanks,
b

running " find / | grep nic_config_tivo" yields no results on my SA13.0

There is an ifconfig command in /sbin/ifconfig

If you need this an a similar rig, try this (with your own IP addressing):

/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.33.217 netmask 255.255.255.0
route add default gw 192.168.33.1

.217 is the tivo and .1 is my broadband router.

If it works then put it in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author or rc.sysinit

BTW, I don't do this on a regular basis but it seemed to work just now. It may break other stuff so the usual disclaimers apply.

Ran across this post on a search. Trying to set the IP of my Series 1 TiVo ABOVE my DHCP settings.

The above post DOES work, but it also will crap out your #401 daily calling via internet. If you MUST have your TiVo do its daily stuff via internet, this probably won't work for you. If you don't care how TiVo does its thing, you'll need to go into the Dialing prefix and remove the ,#401 so that it uses the modem and phone line.

Also, although I can ping, telnet and Tivoweb without problem, for some reason I can't gain an FTP connection. Still working on that one.

Which client are you using to connect to your TiVo? Some are notorious for not working - IE for a start. This is because the ftp service on the TiVo is single threaded, where as a lot of the (especially GUI based) ftp clients default to using multiple threading.

Try command line ftp - that should always work.

Hmmm I was using WS_FTP. It had always worked fine before. BTW, I never was able to connect with it. I gave up. May have to go back to DHCP.

The reason I don't want DHCP, is because I access my Tivo on the road using port filtering which I have to set in my router. But when the IP keeps changing (power outages, etc), that means I have to go into my router and change it. I just realized I can enter my router on the road as well, but it's starting to become a headache every time I need to "look" for my TiVo (it almost never shows up on my Linksys clients table).

You may not have written exactly what you thought you had here, in any event it makes little sense to me.

As was suggested earlier, just run nic_config_tivo (usually located in /sbin on your path) and follow the menu to set a static ip on your TiVo, remembering to also set the default gateway and subnet masks.

HTH...

Does your Linksys support DHCP reservations? If so, all you have to do is put in the MAC address of your Tivo and what IP address you want it to have.
