Thermal alarm

I'm loving the resources for upgrading the TiVo - thanks in advance! I have an issue I need some help with. (I would have posted to the help section except I've upgraded the drive)
I have a Series 1 TiVo/14hr model. A couple of weeks ago, the screen image started locking up. The remote would still signal (light on the front of the TiVo blinked), and the remote would turn the TV controls - mute, volume..., but TiVo controls wouldn't work.
I reset (system reset) the unit and it would work for a day or so.
The lockups became more frequent and finally, the "Internal temperature is too high" screen was displayed.
I assumed the worst, and hoped for the best. I took the opportunity to upgrade the drive (excellent instructions online and with the TiVo Hacks book) thinking that the drive is probably near the end of it's useful life as the unit was one of the first TiVos. No issues, went like clockwork!
However, the last step of the installation is to test the drive in the unit, which I did. Call completed, shows taping, mega hours showing up, watching the temp go from 25C to 32C and -----
"Internal temperature too high..." error! This is with the case open and none of the audio gear below turned on.
So, I'm perplexed. What the heck is wrong? What do I do about the thermal alarm? Battery (just a wish - I'll replace it tonight). I'm fishing for ideas here - any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
cd...

Have you checked the cooling fan? Is it spinning slow or perhaps not spinning at all?

Yes, I have checked the fan. It does run sort of slowly. However, I thought with the case open, I wouldn't even need the fan to cool the board/hd. Right/wrong?
I'll order a new fan and see what happens.
In the meantime, does the battery on the motherboard on these things ever need changing? I had a similiar problem with a computer where the BIOS would wig out and the eventual source of the problem was the motherboard battery.
Thanks for the reply,
cd...
