So far so good... but a couple of ???

Wow, been lurking for awhile and seeing some of these post(ers) makes one hesitant to post anything here! haha! But what the hell, I'll just plonk "those" posters (what a minute this isn't usenet...)

Anyway, been reading about TIVO for quite some time. With the current rebate I decided to get the SA 40-hour and add more later if everything pans out. Most of problems so far have just been with the IR blaster -- but I think I got that squared away.

I have the cable split, so we still do a lot of LIVe watching, of course, the limitiation are the digital channels when recording and watching LIVE. Otherwise we use the TIVo exclusively to watch LIVE. Granted it takes a little (lot?) longer to switch between channels, but the menus and the gui is so much nicer than comcast.

One question I do have is the handling of shows in syndication that are repeated throughout the day, e.g. Seinfeld. From other threads I gather the best way is to set a manual-time record prevent the recording of mutiple-same shows in a day. Right?

One other question, is there a way to handle a sequence that would need a condition... for example. There are 3 shows in the same hour slot, say 8:00 pm. 2-30 minute shows and 1-One Hour show. What I would like to do is, if the first 30-minute show is a repeat then record the 1-Hour show, only if the second 30-minute show is a repeat. Otherwise copy both 30-minute shows. Does that make sense? Basically I don't want to waste space copying half a show, if it's going to just jump to the next "first-run" 30-minute show. Boy I confused myself.

If anyone can understand that mess, please let me know if it's possible. btw, if someone can do some better searching than me and this has been discussed, the search criteria would also be useful.

much appreciated!

1.) If the guide data is correct, not likely, then the system will only record the first showing. Otherwise, the manual repeating recording is the option.

2.) There is no if-then-else type of structure for the season passes. What there is, is a priority system. You'd order the shows to try to emulate your scenario. If a show is repeated later, then make it a lower priority so that if it doesn't record because of a higher priority show the Tivo will then record the second showing.

Did this make any sense? :D

Most shows have enough guide data that manual repeating recordings are not necessary. There are a few that do not have good guide data, of course.

On the second question, if I understood your request correctly, yes, it's possible to do what you want with TiVo by setting it to make recordings in the following priority order:
  1. first run only half hour programs
  2. hour program
  3. repeat and first run half hour programs
This will record both half hour programs if either is first run. If both are repeats, the hour program gets recorded.

Sweet! I'll give that shot... tomorrow's the big night -- must see tv vs csi, haha!

thanks again!

Note: You can't have two season passes for the same show on the same channel. Therefore, you'll need to use autorecording wishlists for at least one set of half hour recordings.

Another quick question:

When I do the Select-Play-Select-3-0 for the 30 second skip it doesn't accept. I'm watching a recorded show. Press select, play -- the status bar appears. I press select again, then when I press '3' the machine goes "BONG", as in bad command and the status bar disappears.

Any help? If it helps, I'm using a series 2 on version 3.2.1.

thanx

I may be wrong about this but it seems like the 30-second skip was taken away for a short time and it may be that version you have. Since you are using a S2, you should be getting an update to 4.0 any day now.

As for your first question, if you want to record a show (like Seinfeld) that comes on multiple times a day and only want to record one of them, you can either set up a manual repeating recording or you can set it to Save Until I Delete (SUID) and Keep At Most (KAM)= 1. This will record one episode and leave it on there until you watch it and delete it. Then it will record the next available ep and it will be there until you watch and delete, etc.

Not sure about your version, but you do need to hit select again at the end. So its S-P-S-3-0-S then you should hear bing bing bing instead of bong. :) Unless your version nerfed it, then you have to wait for 4.0 upgrade. :(

The update is fetched in the first daily call and installed by rebooting your TiVo at 2am. If you don't want to wait (or if you have a ~2am recording you don't want to miss), you can force a call now and then a reboot (there are menu items for both).
