Ok guys what did I do wrong?
I have a hacked 40gig drive in my hdvr2. I want to copy that image and put it on a WD 160 gig drive. I used the following commands to copy.
dd if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdb bs=1024k
Put the drive back in the Tivo and all is well except it still only listed record time at 35 hours. So I used Hinsdale method below to expand the drive.
mfsadd -x /dev/hdc
When I did that I get.
Current estimate standalone size: 40 hours
Nothing to add!
What did I do wrong?
Thanks!

This comes up occasionally. No progress on figuring out why mfsadd won't work, though.
Try doing a pipe copy instead:
mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdc | mfsrestore -s 127 -xpi - /dev/hdb

Great! I'll give that a try. I'm going to sound stupid here, what is the symbol between hdc and mfsrestore? Thanks!

I found it. Thanks!!

For everyone else, that's the 'pipe' character - generally a shift-backslash.

Well, I thought I had it figured out but I guess not. When I did the original copy process listed above I had an exact copy of my modified drive. However I could not expand it to take advantage of the large drive.
When I tried the pipe copy I lost all or most of my mods. But I would expand to the larger capacity.
Any way to make one of these options work?
Thanks!

Where did you keep your mods?

Not sure I can answer that. I bought this unit already modded.

I did make a mod to my ip address on hdc7 if that means anything. I don't have a good understanding of the partitions yet.

If it's a monte'd DTiVo2, then MFS Tools can't copy that properly.
Which means dd is the only way to upgrade this unit without having to reinstall all the hacks.
Which means the fact that mfsadd didn't work is a real problem.
